Here is a spyderco mule blank I have just had some fun with. More practice for me on the grinder.

Tiger maple with black liners. I love this wood its my favourite handle material.

This blank design was a real PITA. Gonna be a sweet user blade.

The last pic shows a small slip up. shaved the skin of my thumb with a touch. It was close..

Hope you like it. I do :D

It looks like the handles are thick, I like it. I bet it's a delight to hold and use. Really good work.

Can you explain how you pinned the scales to the knife?

I want a mule to put scales on, but I can't justify the price.

Looks great! Can't wait till I get my first mule

Well the blade is epoxyed and the brass pins stop movement.

Literally I just glued the parts in the first pic together. Plenty of epoxy and then clamps to ensure a tight fit.

The fibre scaled were expoxy'd prior to the final glue.

The handle is a great width for a bushcrafter and the short blade will give excellent strength in strokes.

Cost wise you cant really beat them as I got my blank for $50 and the scales were $10. Maybe throw in another $15 for brass pins and epoxy and liner material.

I buy in larger quantities though which gets part prices down. I'd say this knife cost $75 max.

It was a pain on my grinder. I should have used my dremel for the tight handle radius's but you live you learn.. :D

Could you help a brother out here, and tell me where I can find a mule? I understand they're of a limited production, but I'm not sure where to find them. I look on Spyderco's site quite a bit, but where would they be listed when they do arrive? Are they due a new one soon? Thanks for your help, I really would like the chance to jump on one of these some day..

Hi Lonny,

I don't know any other way than to keep going to the site unfortunately. Occasionally I see some for sale on this site. They sell on ebay but at a much more than they retailed...

Thanks Elof... Its my favourite wood. I was unsure about using it as I am still learning but it all worked out well. The knife gods were smiling upon me :)

Do they perhap s announce it here on BF before they're released to give us a heads up? I'll save my money and wait for them to release one, I don't wanna line someone elses pockets with the the same money I could buy 2 new one's for. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I'll just keep checking..

Just keep an eye out on this forum or on the Spyderco manufacturer's forum. They are usually announced before they go on sale. The individual runs of Mule blades (each in a different steel) are released and when they sell out, they are sold out - although most runs take a few days (or weeks!) to sell out. Normally, Sal releases two or three Mules a year. The next up is rumored to be K390, and a 204P is also in the works. It shouldn't be long before they are announced...

You might also check over at Howe's Knife Shop - he has a couple of CruWear Mules for sale at a reasonable price...
