I had an extra Mule, so I made it into a folder. Satinwood scales, brass hardware, no glue or epoxy. Problem with satinwood is that it is chippy, so I wouldn't recommend it as a knife scale material. I've got big hands, so its a big handle.

so it stays open via thumb pressure/friction? pretty darn neat conversion. thanks for sharing with us.

Yes, I was thinking about an insertable pin, but didn't want to deal with drilling the steel.

Well that's a good way to make a Mule more portable! I bet that big handle is comfortable in use. Good work.

Do you have a pic of the blade without the scales?

I did this to a Becker BK11 and made it into a friction folder. Not an easy task, so I can definitely appreciate the work that went into this.

Congrats.

Terrific design and execution--looks great!

That piece of satinwood came out looking a lot like sapele--or even koa. Nice.
One approach for a "chippy" wood that has not been stabilized prior to the project is to use a penetrating CA like HotStuff (penetrating) for the first one or two finishing treatments. (which, BTW, is also an option used with *petrified* wood with lapidary work). Lots of uses with fills/cracks/chips etc everything from luthiery to turning, for those unfamiliar.

Again, 'tis a fine flippin' Mule you've crafted.
