Hello:
I am a cop and need a knife mostly for cutting stuff (possibly seatbelts and other things that everyone else cuts) and self defense. I do not want anything expensive in the event that I lose the knife. I like the looks, feel and price of the Native. Some people have told me that this would be a poor choice for me because the lock design could cause the blade to accidentially close during a hand to hand knife fight. I know that the chances of me ever needing the knife for a fight are very very slim, but I want a knife that I could depend on if the situation arose. So, would the Native, given it's lockback design, be good for me? How likely is this lock design to close on my fingers accidentially? If you do not reccommend the Native, could someone reccommend something else in the same price range. Also, should I be looking for a longer blade if I want this knife in the event that I need it for self defense? I was also looking at the Benchmade and Griptilian, but I am open to any ideas. I really do not want to spend more than $75 for this knife. Thanks

I think the Native would be an excellent choice. It's one of my preferred folders for hard use situations. I don't know why someone thought it would be prone to failure, I can assure you that mine has never failed me in many hard situations. Take a look at the Native 3D in VG 10. For SD, that is a great little blade, and thanks to the ergonomics, almost impossible to pull out of your hands. I convinced my sister to carry one while jogging.

any folder Can close on you,But look at the Native choil .It act's like a spacer to protect your tender finger's and a Long curved cutting edge .Plus you can set it up for your off hand. It's also small and light enough to put in a shirt pocket;)

I EDC a Benchmade Griptillian in D2 steel. Fast to open, feels good in the hand and sharper then you'll probably ever need. You may want to consider a partically serrated model for seat belt cuttng. If I were still on the road that is what I would choose. I can't comment on the Native as I do not own one but have been considering picking one up.

Benchmade makes a model of Griptillian called the RSK MK 1. It was made for Doug Ritter of Equipped to Survive. It has a modified drop point blade in CPM S30V. I have had mine for a long while now and love it. Although its a specail project that can only be bought on line. The benchamde site will have the links for it. The model # is 552. It has held a edge very well and a little touchups here and there it will keep that edge. It is the folder that i normally carry and have used it at work cutting wire, cardboard and other items to the backcountry to making a fuss stick to start a fire. I feel it would make a good last restort weapon if the suitution arises.

I agree with Ghost 93

The BM Ritter is a great value.

S30V, Bronze washers, Axis lock

they do run a little over a $100....
