Spyderco Native III - Review Req.

I'd have to say that personally I prefer the Native II over the Native III.

I originally got a Native III PE for my EDC and a Native II SE for other stuff but I actually prefered the Native II blade design (slightly smaller than the Native III) and I liked the S30V blade of the Native II better than the VG-10 of the Native III (seems to me that the S30V holds a better edge than the VG-10). I also find that my Native II is easier to open and close than the Native III

I ended up getting a Native II in PE and that is my current EDC while the Native III sits lonely in the cupboard at home.

I don't have a Native II, but a III. I love it, mine is the 3D in VG-10. This is one stout blade that takes and keeps a great edge. Personally, I love the ergonomics also, the finger choil makes it very comfortable. Go for it!

Got my Native III yesterday.

(Warning: Cardinal sin pending!)

I've never been a fan of Spyderco. Sure, I know they sell quality products made with great materials and have stellar customer service, but I've always looked at their knives and thought, "Ugh, that thing is just so ugly!"

Then I saw the Native III. The design was much more to my liking: I prefer wide, spearpoint blades. Combined with great steel and a price I couldn't pass up, I thought, "Well, you can always return it if you don't like it."

Ha. Right. Return my new favorite knife?

Fit and finish are, obviously, excellent. It opens smoothly and locks securely. No blade wobble at all.

The handle just disappears in my hand. Ever been coached on how to hold a tennis racquet? You know, shake an invisible hand, then put the racquet in your hand just like that? Well, the design of the Native III is such that when I do the same thing, it literally feels like there's nothing in my hand. It fits that well. Now, it's probably just that my hand happens to be the size they designed it for... Oh well. :D

The detailing on the handle you really have to see to appreciate; it's a variation of the volcano grip texture that's got a lot more contour to it. Really provides a strong grip, too.

The blade came hair-popping sharp out of the package (well, not exactly; that test was after I had cut the cardboard box it had shipped in to ribbons with no trouble), and remained just as sharp while I walked around in the woods, randomly hacking at branches and limbs.

My only complaint: Tip-up carry. I prefer tip-down. I'm used to tip-down. I've caught myself trying to clip the thing to my pocket upside-down. Going to have to work on that.

I'm going to borrow a friend's digital camera and get some pics posted in the next few days. Stay tuned....
