i am looking into getting a spyderco native, but was somewhat turned off of the CPM 440C steel it was offered in. However, i heard that the natives would be offered in vg-10 soon. so, I emailed spyderco and got a speedy reply saying that the native would be in vf-10 next year, but that it was also being produced in CPM 440V this year. What is CPM 440V and how does it compare to CPM 440C? is it even close to as good as vg-10? Now, i know that steel selection is pretty personal, but i like a steel that holds a good edge but isn't a pain to resharpen, which sounds like vg-10 to me. any advice?

I think you may be confused about what steels Spyderco offers. They currently make the Native in CPM-440V; I don't belive there is such a steel as CPM-440c (though there is a stainless steel called 440c, no CPM attached). They will soon be offering a slightly modified Native in VG-10 as well as the current CPM-440V version. Both steels are premium steels and both would serve you well. I own a Native in CPM-440v and it holds an edge amazingly. A Native in VG-10 will be slightly easier to sharpen, will take a 'grabbier' feeling edge, but will not hold an edge quite as long as CPM-440v. I plan on obtaining the Vg-10 model when it's available in order to compare the two directly.

440C has it's strong point too... very stailness and corrosion resistance... and easy to sharpen... it also holds a reasonable edge. Have this in my Q(PE).

440V is one of the better steels for a knife, although I've heard tales of it being a &#98itch to sharpen. it takes a very aggressive edge, has a toothy feeling to it(even with step 4 on the 204), takes a long time to go dull(see rumors about this), and is high on the corrosion resist. Millie(50/50) and Native(65/35)...

VG-10 is a 2nd to 440V. VG-10 takes a toothy edge, takes a LONG time to go dull and sharpens easy. I have yet to get stains on this steel(only a Calypso jr lt(PE) for a year), but I have a patch of discolouration from a bit of rust(right against the grind line on the tang).

this is just my user opinion, I'm sure better ones will come up.

I don't recall Native being offered in 440C, but they've been offered in CPM-440V in quite some time. I have mine and I like the blade. However I have a slight problem with the backspring and will ask them to take a look at that later.
