I just bought my first Spyderco, a Native. It didnt come with a pocket clip though. I really didnt think much of it, even the guy at the fleamarket didnt think it came with one. I looked online and see they come with one. Does Spyderco sell them seperately?

These knives ship with a pocket clip. You should have gotten it with a new knife. Did you buy from an authorized dealer, or was it a previously owned knife? Spyderco does sell clips, but they generally charge for them. Sal Glesser, who owns and runs Spyderco, recently posted an explanation for why they charge for clips, rather than sending them out for free - the answer was basically that people were requesting Spyderco clips and using them on other knives rather than asking for replacements for legitimate problems. Best course is to call Spyderco's factory store. The number's on their website.

Here's Sal's post:

Interesting thread with many points of view. Thanx for sharing all of your thoughts and thanx for the kind words.

As our Mission Statement says, "We always try to conduct our business in an honest, fair and proper manner". Sometimes others might not think our method is fair or proper, it is surely hard to always please all.

Hi Jlaplant,

Sorry for your disappointment.

We used to make Endura's and Delica's with integral molded clips. When someone broke a clip, we would send them a new knife. Then, We learned that customers were intentionally breaking their clips to get a new knife. Clearly taking advantage of our policy. We solved the problem by charging $10 for a replacement metal clip. We sanded off the old broken clip part, installed a new steel clip with clip screws. Obviously it cost us more than $10 to provide the service. (a service we still provide for the old knives).

We stopped sending clips on a telephone call when we learned that people were getting free clips from us and putting them on all of the non Spyderco knives. Clearly taking adbvantage of our policy. We solved the problem by requiring that they send in their knife so we can determine the problem, or we charged for clips. This works better for us. If you had a problem with a clip, send us the knife explaining your problem. We will take care of you one way or another. If we charge you, it will more than likely be less than our cost.

Hey Eric, very nice assortment you have there.

So yes, they'll sell you a clip. Another recent thread mentioned that spyderco was selling him two clips for $14

Alright thanks. I dont mind paying. I bought it from a vendor at a fleamarket, I dont know if hes an authorized dealer, he had about a dozen spydercos. He does carry a wide variety of knives from ZTs to Randalls so im sure hes reputable. It may have been in the box I dont know, which I dont remember if it came with one like the rest he had did and it skipped my mind till now to ask for the box with it.

I don't think authorized dealers frequent flea markets for sales leads. ;)

Just so you are aware; Spyderco knifes are counterfeited regularly. Many of these are very good copies and could fool even diehard Spyderco fans like myself. I'm sure this is why it was asked if he was an authorized dealer. By purchasing from an authorized dealer you can be assured you are getting a genuine Spyderco product.

That's what I was thinking...spending that kind money on an item at a flea market that is known to be frequently faked is probably not the best idea, that's a recipe for getting scammed.

I never throw any of my knife boxes away. He had the box for it and you didn't take? It all kinda sounds scketchy. Like FDE said Spyderco's are counterfeited alot. The fakes fooled me too. I'd go back and return it or at least get the box. You should show pics of the knife here to so others could take a look and see if it looks like a fake or not. The fact he didn't send you off with the box is strange and the clip being not on it is also.

OP, if it's an FRN native and not a Native 3, I've got a spare Native clip that is probably scratched up a bit. I'm happy to drop it in a envelope for you. Though Spyderco will ship you one for $8 I think. And they have a 2nd gen clip now that won't snag on stuff as easily. The original clips are honestly the worst design spyderco has ever put out.

Though I'm not sure I have a spare barrel bolt to hold it on... Does yours have that at least?

it didnt come with anything other than just the knife. Hes been there a long time, so I do trust him to sell genuine knives and like I said, hes got a lot of other higher end knives, CRK, Randall, Benchmade. Ive bought other knives from him as well and they all seemed real. I forgot about the box cause I ended up looking at some other knives and he gave me a little clotch pouch for each of the knives I bought. But heres some pics I took just now of it. Ive held a few Spydercos and this seems legit to me as well but I never know

You are missing a barrel style bolt that holds in a pocket clip and the end of the knife together.
