Spyderco Navaja -- impressions?

I was wondering what your impressions of the Spyderco Navaja are?

I saw a review of the knife on youtube, which was apparently part of a passaround here on Bladeforums. The guy mentioned that the ratcheting sound had already broken and been fixed once before, and by the time it came to him it had broken again. Is this still an issue, and is it a problem? Is the ratcheting sound just an added effect or part of the blade mechanism (Ie, holding the blade in the closed position.)?

jac_solar, I would suggest if you can, try one yourself, assume the spring will not last and know it isn't a needed function of the knife or have any negative affect on safety. The knife has been IMHO given a bad rap. If it doesn't suite you for use. That is what matters. The non issue for me may have been fixed. Its been 3 years since I bought mine and I never cared to check. If you can get one with a broken spring cheaper. I would. Lucky for other knives they don't rely on a hair spring for their rep. I tend to like knives , I like. To many great designs get missed while the sheeple follow hype and thati is a fact Jac . Just my opinion. :)

The Navaja is an amazing knife, one of the most attractive designs ever made IMO. Both my good friend and I have one. The ratcheting spring broke on my friend's because it is his primary carry, but it's just fine on mine because I cycle between about 15 knives. Even without the ratcheting sound I think the knife is exceptional. Great ergos, beautiful design, a blade shape that turns me on and it's an excellent slicer. Having the noise makes it more fun, but not having the noise makes it more discreet.

The ratchet has noting to do with the function design of the watch to answer your question.

I would highly recommend this knife.

Ah, great. If the ratcheting isn't an important part of the blade mechanism, it's just an added "bonus" or additional effect that should have no bearing on a review or "impressions" about its quality as a knife. The Youtube guy who talked about the knife also complained about most of the wielding options -- but mentioned that it might be different from person to person.

I do agree, based on pictures and video, that it's an extremely good looking knife - so much that I ordered it despite the reviewers complaints. It was basically between this and the Vallotton.

Good choice. I also have a Vallotton and can say that the Navaja is much nicer to carry. Enjoy!
