So I got a used spyderco navaja today. Is there no detent to the knife? I can swing my knife open like a gravity knife.

I've never had this problem with my navaja. Try tightening the pivot, should fix it.

Maybe the ratchet needs a tune up. Maybe it's not a ratchet, but just sounds like one. It makes the ratchet noise in both directions, so there is apparently no pawl. I may have to take mine apart just to see where the noise coming from. I can't see a ball track on the blade near the pivot. I wonder if there is a ball.

Tiguy: The carraca mechanism has no practical effect. I actually took it out of mine due to the noise attracting too many looks.

And there DOES look to be a detent ball on the liner, so I'd take a look there, it's easy to see. You can see it by looking under the bolster when the knife is open and the lock in engaged. If you don't have it, I'd advise sending it to Spyderco or asking for an exchange from wherever you got it.

To the OP: I hope this works out, if you'd like, I can try to get pics of the detent ball on mine for comparison.

Yes! I would love a picture. I'll have to take it apart sometime after Thursday. If there isn't any detent ball is there a way I can purchase them somewhere?

No need to take it apart to see the detent ball. Dis-assembly voids your warranty. Open the knife half way and look down at the the pivot. You should see about 1/2 a small sphere sticking out from the side of the liner lock. The ball should be keeping the liner lock from touching the blade tang. If the liner touches the blade, you don't have a ball detent. If your detent ball fell out, it is a warranty repair. I had one fall out of a Buck Mayo. It's a rare occurrence.

I found the detent ball. The part of the blade that would be marked by it is not visible. The original knives had a ratchet on the heel of the blade. The back spring/rocker was the pawl that locked the blade open. Since the Spyderco Navaja has no back spring, the faux rachet performs no function except to produce a noise that could scare a mugger. The noise is not very loud, and it is generated on opening and closing. The original knife would only click when being opened.

The detent ball is staked into the leaf spring and drops into a dimple in the blade (to hold the blade closed). I don't think this would be an easy repair. You would have to make hole in the leaf spring large enough to accomodate about 2/3 of the ball and then be able to upset the material around the socket enough to retain the ball.

So I won't be able to buy one and "pound" it in?

You initial post states that you purchased the Navaja used and strongly implies that it was defective from the moment you received it. Did the seller tell you the knife was defective before you purchased it? If he did not, then why haven't you demanded that he take it back? Otherwise, if you knew it was defective, why on earth did you buy it?

Pounding on the ball will not cause the material around the ball to crimp the ball in place.
