Hello. Today I just picked up the kershaw blur, my first assisted opening knife. I was expecting it to fly open with ease, but after playing with it im a little disapointed. I honestly feel like i can open my tenacious just as easily and dependably as this assisted opener. Anyone else feel the same way? That is not to say that the kershaw blur isn't an awesome blade.

Don't own a Blur, or any AO for that matter, but I do own a couple automatics and I honestly feel I can open a Chaparral, Native V, Sage IV, Schempp Persian, or Stretch as easily or more easily and more reliably.

I have a tanto Blur as my EDC, and I like it, but it does take a good initial flick with your thumb to get it over the hump to deploy the blade. The advantage is that you don't have the follow the blade all the way around once you get it in motion.
I'm just used to it I guess :)

I've got a Shallot and a Tenacious. I'm probably not going to buy another AO just because it makes the knife more aggressive than I need it to be. Spydie holes, flippers and thumbstuds open knives easily and quickly, with more control and less fear factor from bystanders. I can't imagine not having one handed opening, but I just don't need the extra "help". (The Shallot does give a very satisfying "thwack!!" though, and is in my pocket today.)

I had an AO knife open unexpectedly in my pocket and lost interest in them all together. I believe most are well designed and safe to carry. However like you, I have found I can flick open most off my folders just as fast and easy without the AO feature anyway.

My only bad experience with an assisted opener was with a Blur that I once had. I keep my knives in a upper cabinet and my Blur accidentally got bumped by me and slipped over the edge. It fell off of the shelf, hit the countertop and opened as it rebounded off of the counter. For a scary second there me and my wife nearby had to contend with an open knife cartwheeling through the air. No harm done, thank goodness.

I have mostly spydies but I also carry a red rescue blur that I like to have on me for cutting lose panicked horses. (I work around livestock all day as a horseshoer) I really find no problem swithching back and forth between the blur and my spderco rotation of delica, GB, UKPK and Dragonfly 2. What is a switch up for me is when I carry the dragon fly getting reacquainted with the much shorter motion than on my larger spydies.

After my third day of carrying it, I must say the blur is growing on me. The quality is super and i love the blade. I will most likely cycle my tenacious and blur. Still not impressed with assisted opening, but it definitely has its place.
Happy knifing!
