Spyderco opinions evolved

Isn't it funny how opinions can change? My first impressions of Spyderco knives were less than favorable. I was new to Spyderco and really didn't like the FRN handles too much. The samples I played with were pretty beat up too. Here is the thread:

Still, I didn't want to give up on them based on that one experience.

Later, I bought a Scorpius. Love it. This is a knife that seems to get mixed opinions. Funny how I didn't like the bread and butter spydercos as much as I liked the Scorpius. Weird, but that's life. Here's the thread:

Tonight, I opened up my second Spyderco - a Manix. I was toying with a Strider, but this was $90 NIB which I think is a great deal. Spine whack controversy be damned, this knife is incredible. I new it would be big, heavy, strong and scary for my wife. Just what I wanted and this knife has come through in spades. Love it so far. I will report on it a bit more when I can use it a bit.

Anyhow, I was just reflecting on my Spyderco "evolution" if you will. I'm glad I stayed open minded from the start...

Thanks to Sal for his great responses to me. I think I should thank Eric too as I seem to gravitate to his designs!

Glad you stuck with it, I'm sure you'll like the Manix, it's a beast. BTW, I wouldn't worry about those spine whack problems, they are flukes and I'm sure if anyone gets a "bad" one they can just send it back to Spyderco and they'll replace it.

I know exactly where you are coming from, since I personally have only been converted recently, and in that respect, only purchased my first Spyderco 3 months ago, and have since become addicted to everything that is Spyderco. Although I just recently wrote a thread on the topic of FRN, and how much I dislike it's appearance, due to my opinion of it looking outdated, and if not changed altogether, at least modified to appear more modern, since I do understand the benefits of FRN, and I honestly trust Sal's and Spyderco's choices now, and since being bitten by the "Spyder-Bug", all things Spyderco have since completely changed, and that even means finding FRN somewhat more appealing then I previously did before. Even going so far as to say that I now find Spyderco knives attractive, when many people find Spyderco products to be somewhat ugly, however that all changes when you get your hands on one.

Good to read that you didn't give up, and congratulations on the Manix!!
It is a knife with a great deal of positive support, and is definately on my "want" list.
I think everyone has a similar experience with Spyderco. :)

Gotta get a manix. I'll wait till the mini manix comes out then the price on the big one will drop, just like the military.

I dunno. The Manix has been out almost a year now IIRC, it's dropped to the point where it will probably stay. Maybe people will package them together and save a few bucks on eBay or something, I dunno.

Yup, sounds all too familiar :) Mine evolved just after I got a couple of knives seized and went looking for "something" supersteel. Turned out that Spydie was the only one that fit in my "allowance" range. My attitude was sort like "OK - I'll put up the plastic handle just to get a feel for this VG-10 stuff" My first one was an FRN Delica/PE. Then it went to "Hey - this is an OK knife". From there it's gone to Endura/Paramilitary/2 Meerkats/Dragonfly/Salsa/Canadian Pride/Centofante III/Bryd Meadolark/Grey Caly Jr. On the horizon - an SE Spydie of some sort, new and upcoming Delica, probably a Mini Manix. It wouldn't surpise me in the least if either the Byrd Crow or Raven fall in there somewhere if I "run" into one or the other during my "just looking" moments :D I had really decided that a Manix was just not in the equation, but then I bought a Buck/Strider 887SBT Police Advocate and now it's "hey this thing is built like a tank....I wonder if a Manix and/or Al Mar Sere 2K..........

I have to admit that I find Spydercos to be better and better looking.

I will get a quick review up pretty soon just to provide some input/feedabck on using the knife.
