I had endura, and older style endura3.Love the ffg on endura 4,but also like linerless salt handle. Can you put endura 4 blade on a Pacific salt handle? If I buy plain edge salt, how is edge retention compared to vg10?

The edge retention on PE H1 is terrible. It's great on a serrated blade.
I have never tried, but doubt you can change out the blades.
I'll tell ya one thing.......Pac Salt in Spydie edge is one of the best work knives money can buy!! At ~ $80 it's a steal!

I dont know, all knives I use are plain edge,Have couple fully serrated spydercos but havent used them much.Have sharpened serrated blades for some of my friends, and I have no problems with it.Some people on forums say h1 edge retention is decent, some its terrible.i am talking about plain edge. The yellow handle is cool too

I prefer the handle of the Pacific Salt and I like the linerless design but when it comes to pe, H1 is a bit below my acceptable threshold for edge retention. I would get either the pe endura or the serrated pacific salt.

It really depends on usage. Unit / Ken found the PE edge holding to be decent. Lance found it lacking. If you touch up every day, it might not matter.

I like high sharpness & found it lacking the 'bite'. Currently trying to combo carry SE Atlantic and PE Endura VG10 Sabre.

There's no way to swap the blade. Different dimensions.

OT: Lance, I plan to PE the tip of Atlantic and make it pointy. Still need to find the time. Perhaps only the first two small teeth though.
Thanks to your posts ;)

I like the old style linerless endura, had one but gave it away, and I regret it.The ones ive found on ebay are way too expensive.Im still thinking of getting endura or pacific salt, love the ffg blade on endura.but dont like liners.

I like both but the serrated Salt is a cutting machine.
About the steel liners, just pretend they are not there. It works.

I've previously put my standard edge on H1 (using the Sharpmaker up to the white stones and finish with a strop) and it would get hair whittling sharp but the edge retention was quite poor.

Recently I decided to revisit H1 and started by giving it a coarse edge (sharpmaker diamonds) and a quick strop, which shaves cleanly. Maybe my memory of H1 is poor or my expectations are lowered but it appears to hold its edge much better with this type of edge (maybe all steels do...?).

I'm not the type to go and do a bunch of testing with different medias and edge types or steels so have no technical data to back it up but I will say that I am much happier with H1 having this coarser, more aggressive edge and feel it holds this type of edge far better than a very fine one, making its edge retention acceptable in my eyes.

Interesting Jimbo......definitely worth a try! I have a Manix with BD1......doesn't hold an edge well either......going to give a coarse edge a try on that one also.
Thanks for sharing!

If you prefer the E3/Pac Salt handle and a PE blade, then the best option would probably be to find a PE Endura 3 on the secondary market. They show up occasionally on the Exchange, and more frequently on eBay. Then, if you still prefer FFG, have someone regrind it for you.

H1 is said to work much better with a coarser edge, which I put in my Tasman and Pacific as I prefer the way it cuts better than with a more refined, polished (or "fine") edge

If you're okay with touch ups, or not working it too hard, PE is fine. We're just spoiled with all the super steels nowadays. I used mine extensively on cardboard at work, and it was fine. I like the coarser edge idea. I might give it a go whilst I await the wharnie Delica.

Saying the plain edge version edge retention is "terrible" is a massive over exaggeration. After use and sharpening it holds up just as well as medium grade steels like 154cm from benchmades griptilians. Steel snobs are just spoiled these days. Best thing about H1 steel is that in a couple quick swipes on the sharpmaker stones it's hair popping sharp again, that coupled with zero corrosion easily makes me prefer it for edc to other chippy super steels.

I agree with this. Nothing I do with my H1 steels won't last a day or two anyway. Touching them up takes about 5 minutes including dragging the sharpmaker out and putting it back up. I like the noncorrosive aspect as I live about 200 yards from the salt.

So, plain edge H1 is about like 154CM? That is pretty good, actually. I had understood it was more like AUS8, which is not terrible.

It honestly depends on what you're cutting as no 2 user experiences are exactly the same. From personal experience with my H1's they lose the shaving edge just like 154cm and keep a good working edge for a respectable amount of time when im cutting a lot of cardboard. But honestly almost all steels lose that crisp shaving edge reasonably quick, people that claim a steel still shaves after a lot of use just aren't cutting anything abrasive, probably paper....Yes other steels that have properties designed to hold a longer edge do hold it longer, but we all end up with a working edge if you actually use your knife for work. The serrated H1's cut longer because that is the nature of the serration design and due to the design you just have much more cutting edge also. If you straightened out all those curves of the serrations you would have an edge about 20% longer than a plain edge model. For a knife that doesnt claim to be an edge holder but resists corrosion like nothing else, i think it's a fantastic steel and always carry a H1 with my primary knife.

I ve never used H1, but I think the retention of my 154cm griptilian edge is decent for a hard use work knife. And the corrosion resistance is very good.
