Hey guys,

I need a knife that will live on the boat for majority of its life. Freshwater environment, will be used to cut ropes that get tangled and miscellaneous other tasks as they come up. (i found an excuse to get another knife)

Here is what I am considering so far...
Spyderco Pacific Salt with the H1 steel $70

Spyderco Salt 1 with H1 steel $60

Benchmade Griptilian with X15 TN for $75
http://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-Gri...sr=1-1&keywords=benchmade+mini+griptilian+x15

I am a huge fan of Benchmade... but Id like to here opinions about the spydys, i really think that all black pacific salt looks GREAT

H1 in a serrated Spidey is one heck of a steel. Benchmades X15 is a little soft but works great. If you don't mind a filly serrated edge, get the H1. If not serrated, flip a coin. But my pick is a serrated Salt.

I have the all black plain edge Pacific Salt and really like it. Thin and light (no liners). PE H1 holds a decent edge, but not like VG10 or 154CM. The serrated H1 is said to be one of the toughest out there. If I were going to get another one, it would be full SE Pacific Salt in yellow (easy to find).

I don't think anything is going to be able to compete with the Spyderco Salt series in this arena...not for the money. There is a very expensive brand called Boyes that would do well but that going to be many times the price of any Salt.

I think you need to check out the David Boye cobalt folder. His knives are made for exactly what you are looking for. They are very very good cutters on things like rope and cut even when they feel dull. Good Luck! Kevin :D

They cost around $125 but sometimes they run a special for $99. Kevin :D

I have a Pacific Salt, love it, in fact it's the only "factory" blade I have (the rest were purchased here). It was an every day user for years. It's always been good to me. I'd give the edge retention a B+/B I would end up sharpening it every 2 or three months. Its primary functions were to open boxes, and cut smaller rope (under half inch). You have linked the black finish, I can't comment on that, never owned anything in black before (those tend to grow legs faster than regular knives)

EDIT: Oh yea and thanks Skyhorse, I keep meaning to bookmark that and never do...

Yep, can't beat a fully serrated yellow Pacific Salt, or Atlantic Salt if you prefer to rounder tip and don't mind the slightly less pleasing aesthetics.

Go with what fits in your hand and pocket the best, and what blade size/style you want most, IMO. Though if it's on a boat I guess it might rarely be in your pocket. They all should be worthy choices.

The Pac Salt will have the most blade and can be had in fully serrated if it suits you. The fully serrated has just enough plain edge at the tip to make this knife more useful than you might imagine.
Then the BM with its axis lock.
Then the Salt 1 as the smallest.

They should all make great boat/beater knives

Thanks for all the input guys. I am very partial towards straight blade, never been much of a fan of serrations. Those Boye knives looks pretty awesome...maybe in the future, but for now it looks like I am going to choose between the BM grip and the spydy pacific salt.

I have a cerekoted CPM-M4 mini grip that I got a few weeks ago, absolutely love it...I am a huge fan of the axis lock and the overal design of the BM products, I also have a mini barrage, my brother has a mini grip and an auto that I regularly snag :)

I have never owned a spyderco knife, I was thinking this may be a good opportunity to give one a try....but I KNOW that I will love the shape of the BM and price wise they are very comparable if you search around.

I think I am going to choose based off of the size and weight....I really do like that the spyderco has the Ti clip and no liners to rust, I am assuming that the BM still has the same stainless liners?

If you don't own a Spyderco yet.. grab the Pacific Salt. You will be amazed at the simplicity of the design. Everything you need.. nothing you don't. It can tuck in your swimsuit waistband and you'll never know it is there. The BM Grip is too bulky, you'll know it's there for sure in your waistband. If you planned on taking it in the water.

Quick pics of each.. My grip is just the standard 154CM though.. but size is same as the H20 version.

I bet people are suggesting to go with the serrated because serrated H1 has extremely good edge holding (grinding the serrations hardens that particular steel A LOT).

I'll agree that I'm not a fan of partial serrations and on the whole prefer a plain edge. But Spyderco's full serrated SpyderEdge is really amazing.. it cuts/slices/etc very well.. I have a Stretch Spyderedge and love it. The H1 Spyderedge is the best Spyderedge you can get because of what Goosey explains above. Do yourself a favor and try one at some point. This may be the best time as it fits exactly into your needs (waterproof and rope cutting) = SpyderEdge Pacific Salt.
