Does anyone know the edge angle of the Para Milly D2 from the factory? I am using it as a carving knife and would like to know the most aggressive angle I can put on D2? My lansky goes down to 17 degrees. Would 17 degrees be OK? I have read that most Spyderco Knives come from the factory at a 15 degree angle. If this is true should I get a sharpmaker?

My GATCO sharpener set goes down to 11 degrees. And I have several knives sharpened to that angle. Really agressive but do not want to abuse them, they will chip.

D2 is pretty tough. CPM D2 is even tougher. 30 degrees included (the narrower setting on the SharpMaker) shouldn't bother the knife at all, as long as you aren't carving rock or bone. The SharpMaker is easier to use and gives better results than the Lansky in my opinion.

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe that the Paramilitary comes from the fatory with a 30° angle. I have a para D2 and use the 30° setting on my sharpmaker which works very well.

Thirty degrees included is the goal at the factory. The final sharpening is done by hand, so it does vary a bit.

mine came in at 40 I didn't even bother to reprofiling it with diamond rods or stones, until I got my belt sander and reprofiled it to 25 inclusive

I used a CPMD2 Military that was reprofiled to 10 degrees per side with a 15 degree per side microbevel if I remember correctly. It cut well sharpened like this and did not chip while carving wood or any other usual cutting tasks.

My own D2 knives are taken to about 8 degrees per side with a 12 degree per side microbevel (Angles are estimates).

If I were you, since you are using the knife for a task where edge geometry plays a dramatic role (Whittling wood is actually the test I use to feel if the edge on my knife is thin enough for my liking) I would take the bevel down to 8-10 degrees per side by hand, then use the lowest setting on your sharpening jig to apply a microbevel.
