Hi all,

I was wondering about the recent premium price on the Spyderco Para2. I noticed a sprint run brown para at my local knife shop going for twice that of the normal para. Is this normal........should I expect to pay 50% - 100% give the recent "shortage" on para2s going on?

Note - I hope this is not against the general Knife discussion rules. Mods please move or remove as needed.

You will pay more, quite a bit more, for the various "Sprint runs." However, for this money, you are generally paying for a premium blade-steel. There is an aspect of rarity also, but I think it's mostly related to better blade-steels.

yeah you are always going to pay more for premium materials and limited availability if you didn't then we would all own a Ferrari :)

When the brown para 2's with S35vn steel came out, they went for right around 145-150 online. Since then, they pop up for 200+ on the forums and various websites.

It's all about supply and demand.

I've seen orange Manix 2 sprint runs sell for over $200.

It all depends on when you catch the sprint runs.

As someone else said when the brown S35vn sprint para 2 came out you could snag them for $140-150, when the normal para 2 was oh $105-110. So the $30-40 extra was the blade steel.

However, now they can easily go for over $225, and approaching $400 for the Brown and Orange 20CP versions or blue M390 on ebay. That's simply demand because it's now rare and harder to find, I wouldn't call it hype, but it's not bringing that price because of the materials either, it's simply because it's rare. Would I pay $140 vs $110 for a para 2 in a premium steel, sure, would I pay $200+ for S35vn vs $110 for a para 2 with S30v....nope. Would I pay $300 for a para 2 in ANY steel, no way and I really like the para 2.

It's like the Mule knives, if you catch them at release they are a good deal, but once everyone buys them up they show up on ebay for $150, by the time you put handles and a sheath on it you have a $250+ knife that's not worthy of a multitude of knives you could buy at the same price point.
