OK all, I just received my Para 2 yesterday.
Lemme preface this review by saying that everything you've read about this knife is absolutely true.
Here goes:
- Appearance: all business, somewhat nasty looking (this is a good thing)with that blade shape and extra long pointy tip
- Ergos: Perfect fit in my hand; my thumb and forefinger fall naturally at the thumb ramp and finger choil; the swell in the middle of the handle feels very comfy in my palm; there is no way this thing is gonna slip from my hand no matter how hard I use it; very comfy with all rounded corners; very nicely done jimping at the thumb ramp of the blade, liners just behind the thumb ramp, and finger choil; not too rough, not too smooth; G10 is nice and grippy, but not so much as to rip apart my pocket
- Lock: I think that besides the Chris Reeve style integral Sebenza lock, the compression lock is the absolute strongest one out there; the thing locks up like a bank vault; It actually feels like a fixed blade in the hand; only comment is that disengagement is a little "sticky" making unlocking with the index finger a little painful; unlocking is much easier with the thumb, but then there's a slight extra step for completely closing the blade into the handle; I'm sure a little oil and use will smooth this out
- Blade: Scalpel sharp; how does Spyderco get these consistently stupid sharp knives on a production basis? it's uncanny; I looked at the edge under a 10X loupe; it's got the grinding striations which end in a slight "micro saw" design at the absolute edge; it easily shaves; I shudder to think how sharp it'd be with a polished edge; the blade is very thick at the handle end (a little over 1/8"); tapers nicely all the way to the tip but is still thick enough to handle light prying; the extra length at the tip is one of my favorite features; for such a large knife, it'll be a good little splinter picker and easy to use in small spaces
- Fit and Finish: although I said this thing looks all business and nasty, the F and F is astounding; I'm particulary anal about blade centering, solid lockup, rounded corners, finish of metal parts etc; this thing is as close to perfect as I've ever seen while still keeping that "put me to work dammit" attitude

Summary: I'll use the crap out of this knife and never sell it. Spyderco just has a way of making knives for real world use. It's a little big for EDC, specially in the office, so it'll be my after work/ weekend workhorse.

I'd be particularly interested in hearing from other owners about the disengagement of the compression lock. Does it get easier? Do you disengage with your forefinger or thumb?

Hope you all enjoyed this review.
Lenny

Thanks for the review. A lock that is tough to disengage is a good thing. Now how about some pictures?

I knew I was gonna get hammered for no pix.;)
I'll get some up tonight.

Chris Reeve style integral Sebenza lock, the compression lock is the absolute strongest one out there

Stonger than Andrew Demko's Triad lock?

Nice review man - where's the pics?

My understanding is that the frame lock is actually weaker than the compression lock. Reeves frame lock is actually a few spots away from the top. On topic though I have a P2 in s30v and s90v. I absolutely love this knife aswell.

I have no idea what his lock is like.
Please explain?
Lenny

Stongest lock for a folding knife in the world. :)

Shown here - but it's on almost all CS models now.

A little follow up:
I was playing with the blade yesterday, checking for blade play by flexing it back and forth pretty hard. After a few flexes, it started to click ever so slightly indicating horiz blade play. I took out my Torx and proceeded to tighten the pivot screws. One didn't move at all, the other one tightened up pretty easily. So I figured the loc tite was either missing, insufficient, or never set up on that screw. Anyway, after I cranked it down and found the sweet spot between no play and easy opening, I checked the blade again for play. Same thing, after a few flexes, it loosened up and exhibited blade play. So I took both screws out, cleaned them off (btw, both screws showed blue loc tite on them) and applied a small amount of new loc tite to them. Cranked them down again finding the sweet spot and let it dry over night. I'll check for blade play again when I get home tonight and report back to you all.
Keep in mind though, that I was really applying force to the blade at the tip. This being a long blade, I was really torquing the pivot, but that doesn't excuse it.
Just thought I'd bring this up to give you all a complete review.
Any comments from other Para 2 owners?
Lenny

I have had my para2 for over a weak now and their is absolutely no signs of blade play and I use it daily. I dont however just sit and apply torque to the pivoting point though.

The G-10 handle is the best compromise of grip and pants friendly I have felt. And I also noticed how razor sharp the knife was out of the box. After a week though I do see signs of slightly less sharp, can still shave hair though. Great knife I wish I had the funds to get it in the CF and S90V

As promised, pix.
Enjoy
As I said earlier, I loc tited the pivot screws and let it dry over night.
I cut up a butt load of thick cardboard today and the pivot is still tight as a vault.
Guess I over flexed it the other day.
I literally put the tip on the counter with the knife sideways and put my weight on it and watched the blade flex a bit. Did this on both sides.
No wonder I loosened up the screws.
Now that I think of it, it was probably the equivalent of wedging it into a tree and me standing on the handle.
I know it's a tough knife, just not that tough.
Just for giggles after that, I stroked it a few times on the white rods if my Sharpmaker.
OMG, the thing is absolutely stupid sharp now.
When the blade gets close to my arm hairs, they literally jump off before the it even touches them out of fear. :D
Lenny

PS: I now have my 2 all time favorite knives; Para 2 and Sage 1; it'll be tough choosing every morning

...waiting for the inevitable thread, "wS30V blade damage, my fault or Spyderco's fault?" :D

Hey this isn't the Cold Steel forum. No making knife ladders or meat cycles. :D Glad you got her fixed up. I was beginning to think they sent you one of the Spydies reserved for me....

Wise Ass:D
Anyway, another short update.
I've been using it pretty steadily the last few days.
The lock tab is definitely smoothing/loosening up.
It no longer kills my forefinger to release it.
I can hold it in for both flick opening and flick closing.
Man, I still can't get over what a large knife this is.
Never held a Military or Strider though.
I really think the Para 2 is about the largest folder I'd ever want to use.
Lenny

When you hold a Military you won't find this knife to be large. The blade isn't that much longer but if you include the handle, the Millie is about an inch longer. I love them both very much. I am still working my locks in on my Para's though. I can't wait till they're broken in, this is getting a little sore.

Hey all, a quick question.
I've noticed that in some pix of the clip side of the Para2, that the 2 signatures of Sal and Eric are in different places.
Some have both signatures in front of the hole, and some, like mine, have Sal's in front, and Eric's behind the hole.
Anybody else notice this?
Does this indicate when the knife was made?
Thanks all,
Lenny

i wondered that to. mine was made in dec and the sigs are like yours.

Lenny,

Is the clip on your P2 a bronze-ish color? It looks that way in the photographs. I ask because the one I bought last summer at SFO came with a shiny stainless clip, and I am liking the more subtle look of yours.

Bill

respectfully submitted, no folder was ever designed for blade flexing against the pivot. folders are designed for portable carry, especially pockets. the excellent spydie products were created [ as were all folders ] for cutting , not prying. it's a simple thing to carry a piece of slender steel about 7 in. long in your pocket to pry with. in addition most users are in close vicinity to a screwdriver to pry with.i do'nt wish to start a flame war here but trying to drive your auto thru a swamp makes as much sense, all knives are made for cutting instead of prying open paint cans & doors.--dennis

No, it's bright shiny SS.
I guess the flash just makes it look that way.

OK, I'm an idiot, what can I say.
Guess I just wanted to see what it could take.
Now I know! :D
