Hi STR,

I've have heard so much about your custom work from the Spyderco forums. I must admit I am really impressed with your work. It all looks top-notch. I'm considering a complete overhaul. ;)

Anywho, I own a Spyderco Paramilitary. A lot of people complain about how high the knife rides clipped in the pocket. I am not one of them, I like it just how it is. :D

Anyway, I bought the black bladed version in plain edge. I've come to slowly dislike the black and was wondering if it was possible to remove all of the black. What kind of finishes? Price? I didn't see anything similiar mentioned in your pricing posts.

Secondly, blade centering. Do you work with that? Mine's not that far off, but who would refuse a perfectly centered blade? lol.. $?

Thirdly, I don't use the lanyard hole, but it is significantly off-centered from the factory. I was wondering if that was ~centerable~. Or perhaps removed/replaced with something else? $?

Fourthly, is it possible to make the action smoother? I think maybe somethings just a little tight from the factory, I don't know. Probably just a screw needs to be loosened or something. $?

Fifthly, do you in general just clean knives up when you get them? I haven't taken the knife apart ever and don't plan to and would rather have a professional do it. In salty places like where I live (Hawaii), you have to worry about rust a lot.

Sixthly, I also couldn't find any pricing on sharpening. I'm a terrible sharpener even with a tri-angle sharpener and it's just plain not even as sharp as it was from the factory. How do you sharpen knives? I was thinking 25 degrees would be nice! :D Or just something I will be able to retain using the 30 degree angle on the sharpmaker. :o

I know this looks like a hella lotta work, in fact, half of it could probably be solved if I sent it back to the factory and the work would be free. Hmmmm... (2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th listed issues) Anyhow, your opinion on my concerns would be greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks. Ok. Where to start.

Lets take it from the top.

The black blade: Well I'm sure I could bead blast the blade and strip it for you on that part yes.

Blade centering. I've found on my own para that blade centering can be affected by both pivot tension and stop pin tension. You might adust or loosen both on yours to see what the blade does.

Lanyard sleeve: Not sure I can help much with the lanyard sleeve because I'm not sure I follow and two its kind of set in stone once in place because of the way its built into the handle on this model.

Smoother action: Yeah I can fix that. I did that to my own actually. Funny I just got another reply the other day asking about that also. I had this other one in to work on and it was smooth as silk. Then my own came in the mail shortly after that. My knife was really gritty when I got it the other day and no amount of lube or anything else would make it as smooth as the other one I happened to have here for a low rider clip. I took it apart and it had PB washers in it but apparently one side of the blade was still dragging on the G10 just enough to make it give off that gritty feel and sound when the blade pivoted. I'm sure over time that could work out but I was too impatient for that. I swapped out thte PB washers with some of my teflon ones I use in my customs and fixed the problem. They are slightly thicker than the factory ones which were just a tad too thin to keep the blade from touching the G10 when it moved. The new ones make it like silk and quiet!

Clean up: I would feel like I ripped you off to take that Para Military apart and clean it up and then bill you for it. Its got to be one of the easiest break down knives on the planet. I am certain you could do that yourself but if you sent it to me other things I'd do that for you yes. If I have to replace washers or take the blade out to bead blast it anyway that would be the time to do all three. It would also give me a chance to see what is going on with the sleeve for the lanyard.

Sharpening the blade: I can sharpen it yes.

I doubt all of it would be anymore than my minimum shop fee of $30 including shipping.

Its easy stuff compared to most of the stuff I do.

I would have to resharpen the blade too after blasting it so I included that in the total but forgot to mention it in my first post. I do ask that everyone read post number one in my low rider pocket clip thread before mailing anything to me. So please read the bold print part of that post. Thanks

Wow, I like the price! :D Do you take money order? I assume your address and things are in the post your talking about. I think I'll make my decision soon, thx.

Money orders are fine. No I don't have my address out there on the forum.

If we get that far I'll pass it on to you.
