Spyderco patent numbers check?

Does anyone know of a way to check spyderco product patent numbers for authenticity? I found an old spyderco copilot some guy is selling. It has the patent number stamped on the pocket clip just like the original, I just want to make sure I'm not getting screwed. $40 for a knife that has to be a collectible by now seems too good.

If you just want to check the number, I'd hazard a guess that you can search the USPTO database with the number and see if it matches with a patent filed by Sal Glesser.

Or does anyone know how to tell a real one from a fake? I know that spyderco knives are pretty commonly ripped off.

I've never seen a fake copilot and doubt there ever will be one. Counterfeiters want what is new and in demand.

I agree, copilot is not one to fake.

Personally, I've seen a lot of knives and would not say that Spydercos are "commonly" ripped off as exact copies. Most of the ripoffs I've seen are poor takes on the original. For example, there have been ripoffs of the delica and endura for years, but you can tell it's a copy before you pick it up.
