Anyone who has both the moran and perrin.
Which of the two you use the most?
And if you would buy a second, would it be a perrin or a moran?

I have both and I like both, but as a user I like the Moran.

I've heard the Perrin was supposed to be discontinued soon, so maybe you should get a Perrin first :)

Xavier.

I have the Perrin. I don't like the way the handle fits my hand. It's awkward around the middle finger, so I ground it down with a dremel so it fits me better. Still not that comforable though. After I bought the Perrin I tried handling the Moran at a show. Much better ergonomics IMO. It's funny because from looks I woulda thought it's the other way around. I couldn't justify owning both though.

I've owned both. The Perrin was probably the more versatile of the two, and I absolutely loved the deep choil design, that handle fit my hand great, and had excellent retention qualities. The Moran on the other hand cut like an absolute laser, was very light to carry, and handled game cleaning and food preparation better than most any other knife I've ever known of. (with the possible exception of a custom I just got from Chiro 75 last week)

I guess when it comes down to it I was just slightly more comfortable with the Perrin due to the extra inch and a half blade, the retention, and it's being slightly more rugged. That being said, my fathers favorite piece of hunting equipment he's ever owned it a Moran I got him some years ago, every time he comes back from hunting or fishing I hear about how many animals it cleaned or how many fish he's filleted without having to sharpen it. I forget his current record.....a dozen moose, three grizzly, and fifteen caribou before it needed to be stropped? :D

Pretty much boils down to personal preference- I believe the Moran cuts better, but the Perrin is more rugged.

Moran drop point as a camp / user - and much more comfy for a wider varierty of people.

Perrin for urban fighter, but still performs fine for camp uses. A little too long for that purpose IMHO. If you're going to buy both in the future get the Perrin NOW - they are getting harder to find since being discontinued.

Both great knives, but slightly different purposes.

would the longer blade of the perrin be an advantage for food prep. or kitchen use or is the moran still more versatile?

I've heared the perrin is very light, so I thought it would be very comfy but it seems not as comfy as the moran.

I also own both, but the Moran sees more use for food prep
as it is really an extention of the hand.

I have only the Perrin. The handle feels awkward due to the abrupt drop off of the deep finger choil. However, compared to other tactical knives without guards, I still prefer the Perrin. The choil on the Perrin is deep enough to give an absolutely secure grip. I do not think that is the case with several other similar tactical knives.

For example, I recently bought a Camillus CQB. The finger choil on the CQB is fairly shallow, and I believe it would be much safer to stab with the Perrin owing to its deeper choil. So while the CQB has a better FEELING handle, I still perfer the Perrin with its SAFER handle - for tactical use, at least.

I have both here with me. I have the trailing point Moran. These are both very high quality knives (IMO) using a very high end blade steel which Spyderco HT's really well.

If I were going to buy another it would be the Perrin because it has more viable options for my type of knife usages. Also, there is that unfortunate little glitch of it having been discontinued. :grumpy:
