Spyderco Persian question.

All,

I have recently acquired a Spyderco Persian with the red G-10 slabs from Knifecenter. I think the blade is 3 inches long and it has a simple engraved "bug" logo on the steel clip which is top/right carry.

My question is this: How many sprint runs on the Red Persian have occurred recently and what were the specs (when did it come out??) for the original design? I know I've seen examples of another Persian in red G-10 but this one had a distinct yellow bug on a black clip and may of had a 0.5 inch shorter blade. When did the original actually come out?

The knife is built as solid as would be expected, razor sharp out of the box, however you can't adjust it with torx tools because the metal bolsters cover over an screw hole that might be there. Thanks for you help!

You have the only red Persian model that was made.

The sprint run had this non-painted metal clip. Maybe what you saw was the Prototype picture which had the original black clip with yellow bug. When they finally came out, they had the clip you have on yours.

The specs are the same as the original Persian that was discontinued around 2005. Differences were the color and the material of the scales (black micarta --> red G10) and the mentioned clip.

They were never adjustable; the whole knife incl. the pivot is pinned. The knife is known to be a little stiff in the beginning but breaks in well with use. No need to adjust it; that's how Ed Schempp wants his knives to be.

This is a good read:

Here's a pic of another Sprint run Persian (not mine):

So I guess this is the prototype of the current sprint-run for the red G-10 Persian?

Yes, this is the prototype pic made by Spyderco.

There are quite a few (prototype) pics on the official page that show a knife that differs from the final production model.
The JD Smith Sprint Run i.e. featured a full flat grind, while the description page @ Spyderco shows a hollow grind. Other examples would include differing (more/less) pins/screws, or different clips, like in this case.

Your knife is 100% legit and just like they all are, so enjoy it, it's a fine knife ;)

The picture was probably a "photoshop" job, using an early black micarta Schempp Persian and coloring the scales red. Later black ones, and both the new ones, have Ed's logo on the right side of the blade and a Spyderco "bug" on the left side.

The actual Sprint Run version looks like this...

Blade is 3.5" inches, as was the original C83, but some dealers had it listed incorrectly as 3".

Thanks Deacon. That's exactly what I have then. I did notice the different blade sizes on different websites, so that threw me off.

very nice Persian Fall pictures Paul. May be it is not a bad idea to post them in "Persian army" thread? :):p

The Red Persian does still feature a hollow grind, or am I mistaken?

On some pics, it seems the original black Persian's grind is a little higher than the Sprint run, but otherwise it should be basically the same.

The new Persian 2 (G-10 scales w/o bolsters) though is FFG.

...can't wait for it to arrive :)

You are correct Dennis, the Red Persian is hollow ground, just like the original black C83's. As for the grind line, I'd bet if I compared all four of my original ones, or the pictures of the five prototypes I was privileged to photograph for Sal back when the "bring back the C83" movement was gaining momentum, there would be differences. I'm guessing that those grinds, like the edge grind, involve a certain amount of hand work and the variation is the norm.
