Spyderco Pivot Bushing system

I bought a Native 5 salt. The knife is perfect except for blade play. There is excessive play when knife is closed, not that it really bothers me. When opened and stabilized by the engagement of the lockbar there is still slight side to side play. As per a previous thread I also discovered that the thickness of the pivot bushing is wider than the thickness of the blade. Unless the bushing is the exact same thickness as the blade, then there will always be blade play.

Unless there is a specific purpose (which I doubt). Why can't spyderco get their bushing system dialed in?? I have a Para 3 which I had to sand down the shoulders of the bushing to get it perfect. Looks like I am going to have to do the same with this knife. Just very frustrating. Many people complained about the exact same issue on their Native 5 salts, but thought if that is a know issue then surely spyderco would have sorted it out by now.

My Bad, forgot a pic :D

Yep I’ve noticed this on a few of their models with bushings. Most people don’t seem to notice or care. It bothers me so I avoid ‘em.

You should check the the inner radiusing on the shoulders of the bushing. If the shoulders aren't cut sharp enough all you'd have to do is chamfer the inner hole of the washers a little. Otherwise reducing the pivot width is very tricky, as you know from doing it.

Generally I love the bushing models. When they're good, they're great.
I agree. A well dialed in bushing system is awesome, but think I will avoid them in the future because of the variances. I would have thought that QC would have been way more consistent especially coming from Golden.

IIRC, this has only been an issue with the N5 Salts for whatever reason. I have several N5 LWs in other configurations and none have any blade play issues. Same with the several I have in other configurations G10, Fluted Ti, Fluted CF etc
