Spyderco PM2 Availability?

Hey guys,
So recently I have been hunting a Spyderco PM2 in black G10 and S30V. However, it appears as though everywhere is sold out. Seeing as how this is an amazingly popular knife I was wondering if anyone else has any input as to why this is. Is it a supply and demand issue? Or is it covid-19 related? I'm just curious if anyone knows what's going on.
Thanks

A lot of Spyderco‘s core models are hard to find or completely sold out right now. Same with a plain edge Shaman for example. I think they will be dropping more inventory soon. Hopefully in S45VN.

That’s weird I was just talking to my dad about this last night lol I would guess something COVID related, because even if they are upgrading the steel, why not still make the s30 versions in the meantime? 🤔
.....considering it’s probably their most popular knife

Like most of the shortages in the last 12 months it's probably down to multiple factors. Increased demand, challenges along supply lines, etc. If they are also switching out the steal that also could add to the shortage.

S45vn is now the standard steel. I would hold tight and wait. Definitely an upgrade over s30v. Personally like the super steel variants, but with s45vn now here no need. Not like s30v was sub standard to begin with. Great EDC steel. Just personal preference.

COVID put a kink in Spyderco’s supply chain. They are just now starting to catch up

Military, Manix XL and PM2 Maxamet were briefly available on their factory page yesterday...so that’s encouraging

Anyone know how bad/if there will be a price increase with the S45vn? I am not even that old but Im old enough to remember when you could pick up a stock PM2 for around $100 and now the remaining s30v ones are going for $150. It's a great knife and I'd love to have one back in my collection but sheeeesh.

I'd say maybe $150ish? Could see $200 too. Definitely no where near $100 for 45vn.

Hopefully not $200. Great knife like I said but I think there are CruWear versions right now going for $170. Would be a real shame if you had to come up with 2 bills to get a standard PM2 in a world where something like the Hogue Ritter can be had in 20cv with the same scale material for around $150.

I also hope not, but prices have been trending up it seems.
Ya. I suppose the $200+ price tag on the other larger compression lock S30v knife in their lineup (Shaman) isnt a good sign....

Hell, I remember when the lightweight Para 3 dropped and could be had for under $90.....feels like just yesterday

I appreciate this thread as I've been thinking the same thing. Not too long ago I noticed the PM2s and Para3s in s45vn. They've been replenished a couple times but go quickly. Maybe we will see the Military in s45vn soon. I've been keeping an eye out for a black s30v in stock somewhere since last year and hopefully it's a blessing that l never found one. Hang tight everyone, it seems like things are taking forever in manufacturing these days.

How do you figure that? Seems to be very slightly less edge retention, and very slightly tougher. Its incredibly similar to s30v and especially s35vn. In everyday use I seriously doubt being able to tell any difference.

Kinda my thinking , all the S30v-spy27-s45v are in the same decimal system, I if The blades aren’t marked you
wouldn’t know up from down

Mayyyyyybe (probably wishful thinking) the S30v ones will drop significantly in price. I wouldn't mind picking up a standard S30v PM2 for $110 shipped if they are going to price the new S45VN models at something like $180.

Per article "S45VN shows improved toughness and corrosion resistance relative to S30V along with similar edge retention. Or slightly reduced toughness relative to S35VN but with improved corrosion resistance and edge retention. It shows a better overall set of properties, I think, making S45VN a good upgrade to either S30V or S35VN."

Like I said - s30V is a great steel. In the end all comes down to blade shape and heat treatment. I still love M390 and always will. Have plenty of other super steels in my collection. Would never be able to test them to the fullest. Only true test is edge retention and how easy it is to sharpen or how it comes back after a strop. I am a steel nerd at heart. There are no wrong choices once you get past mid grade steels depending on usuage and environment.

Again, while what you quoted could be true in actual use...I highly doubt anyone in regular use is going to be able to notice any difference at all. The only metric I could see coming up would be if you are around salt water or lots of humidity and the boost corrosion resistance would be more obvious.

With the steels so close (just look at the graphs on Larins site) the blade geometry as you have mentioned is far more important...however even that being equal I cant see anyone being able to tell the difference in a blind test.
