Does anyone have any expirience with these. I just bought one, and have heard that they don't need oil or water, is that true? After short use is already has alot of black streaks on it, how can I remove them, or is it even necessary. Please forgive me if these seem to be silly questions. Thanks.

I have a two sided one (one side fine and one side medium), and I love it. It is 5" long and I've been able to put a razor edge (shaving sharp) on knives as big as a 7 1/2" blade. Best investment I've made in the world of sharpening products.

I was at the Denver custom knife show this weekend, Spyderco had a table selling all sorts of sharpening stones and systems.

I speciffically asked how to get the white stones clean? The company rep said he uses plain old Comet cleaning powder and a green Scotch scrubbing pad.

So after purchasing one of their sharpeners and working on my wifes kitchen knives (3 of them) I was able to get a fairly impressive edge on them and had my white "sticks" pretty well marked up. I whipped out the ol Comet and a green pad just like he did but I wasn't able to get ALL of the marks off. Most of them, yeah, but not all of them.

I have been using my sharpmaker for 3 or 4 years now. To clean I use comet and a pad, or steel wool. You won't get all of the streaks off of the white stones, but they will be PERFECTLY functional afterwards. Don't spent a nanosecond more worrying about the black streaks! Comet and a bit of elbow grease will restore the bite of the ceramic products from Spyderco.

Yup.

Yes, it is necessary -- not to get all of 'em out, but to clean it once in a while. I just stick my Spyderco stones in the dishwasher. I'm sure that I read that Spyderco said it was okay, or I wouldn't do it, but I MIGHT be wrong. Either way, it works just fine.

Been using the 303mf (DoubleStuff) stone for about 2yrs. Working on my 2nd stone right now, since I lost my first while biking.

I usually have it on me, goes about a month between cleanings, just until it's smooth against the knife as I sharpen... so it varies.

I just use comet and a green 3m pad to clean it in the sink... though a ink eraser works for quick touchups to remove the heavy loading.

I've been using the Sharpmaker system for approx. 10 yrs. and haven't cleaned it yet.I did remember seeing the dish washer idea and also the Comet,Bon Ami,cleanser with Scotch-Brite pad idea too.I guess once mine finally clog up I'll clean 'em.tom.
