Spyderco Police - Is there something larger?

I love my Spyderco Police. It serves as a self defense knife since I live in California and can't carry a handgun.

Does Spyderco make anything with a larger blade? I would like to stay with a Spyderco knife because I like the quality and ergonomics.

What do you mean by larger?

As far as blade length goes, there is not much out there longer in a folder.

The Military has a fairly similar blade length, but has a wider blade and a larger handle.

If you are willing to go to a fixed blade you can get north of 9 inches with a Hossom Forester.

I think the Police or Military are plenty of blade for self defense. 4" is plenty of reach and is actually illegal by many California local ordinances.

In California, you can carry any size folder you want most places. A few local ordinances have restrictions. A fixed blade is a felony to conceal. Pretty dumb. It sounds like Spyderco does not address the "large folder" market. A 5.5" Police would be the perfect knife.

Maybe look for a Cuda MAXX, it's not a Spyderco but it might fit your needs.

Honestly I'd train a little more, not buy another knife. The Police is one of the best SD knives ever made IMHO

It's been discussed here before. Sal seems to feel it's too limited a market to be worthwhile. Probably true, when you consider how small a percentage of those who can carry one would purchase any given knife. Most would just whine they'd buy if if the grind, shape, steel, handle material, color, lock type, country of manufacture, or something else was different.

As for me, there's no size limit where I live, although some parts of the state do have a 4" limit, but 3.5" works fine for me. Can't think of a single occasion I've regretted not having a larger folder with me.

Interesting points. Here are some of my thoughts:

1. What if you trained more AND carried a larger knife? It seems to me a well trained individual is made better as the size of the knife increases. A good fighter with a 4" knife is good. A good fighter with a 6" knife is even better.

2. Cold Steel has great products. However, their large knives do not deploy as easily as the Spyderco knives. Their thumbplates do not wave reliably. They often catch on your pants and foul your draw.

3. The Deacon - not to be disrespectful at all ... have you ever defended your life with your knife? How do you know that the size you selected is good?

Benelli Shooter, not to be disrespectful at all, but no, in my 64 years I've never had to do so, do not expect ever to have to do so, and am not the least bit disappointed about that. I carry a knife as a tool, not a weapon. I know the size I've elected to carry is good for me because it fits nicely in my back pocket and I've never found myself wishing I had a larger knife with me.

Yup, the state has no blade length limit on folding knives that have a bias towards handle retention but heavy-urban districts like SF, LA, Berkeley, Oakland, etc. have their own ordinances that override state regulations. I know Berkeley restricts at 3". But if you live in the suburbs or the valley then it doesn't be a problem. Most cops won't bother you about a large folder unless you're waving it around haphazardly.

How the hell do you guys include someone elses post with yours? Anyway I strongly agree with Benelli Shooter as to efficacy of big folders compared to small ones. Mentally compare CS,s kukri 6" 'Rajah' [ which I have and love] to Spyderco's Schemp 3 3/4' kukri which, I'm sure, is a beautifully made knife like all Syderco products.
I don't think it takes a lot of study to come to the conclusion that the Rajah would be a devastating SD knife while the Spyderco Khukuri ,as nice as it is, would be much less effective.

The city of Los Angeles has a 3" blade length restriction on folding knives. However, I've been carrying Enduras for as long as I've lived in California and I've never had a problem. I've used my Enduras to cut and eat fruit at the Hollywood Farmer's Market many times and no one has ever looked twice.

WhaBam!

I know, not quite what you were expecting, but the blade on the Catcherman is 4.75", and the whole thing only weighs 2.5oz!
I carried this knife for just about two years straight, but then the Military stole my heart and things haven't been the same since.
Finding one new would be pretty difficult as the Catcherman has been discontinued for quite a while.

As for SD with a knife, get one of these while you still can. You will not find a knife that draws faster.
(That's a fully serrated Waved Endura 4.)

Absolutely! For self defense, longer is better. Texas will only allow 5 1/2" blades so I'm limited. I carry as big a knife as the law allows for a night on the town. Oh, and I might have a handgun too. ;)

When I lived in Kalifornica I had the KKK threatening my life. Of course "the law" wouldn't issure a CCW. My Uncle, a former USN-SEAL, asked me, "How many times have you been searched in your life?". My answer, "Never". Next question, "How much is your life worth?"

I carried a .357mag there until I could finally get the H*## out of that state. Here in WA State, It's MUST ISSUE as long as you have no criminal history or mental issues.
Not a suggestion as to what anyone else should do, just a tale of what I choose to do ;)
