I bought this in the classifieds here. It was mentioned to me by someone else that this is probably a fake. Curious if anyone can verify?

If legit, what is the origin? Was it a sprint run for a knife shop?

I haven’t seen this variant. Looks like a stainless model but with G10 scales and a and full sized police model clip. It looks to be very high quality and looks like a Spyderco to me (I am no expert though).

A comparison to my G10 Police 3 model

Saber grind plus 4 way clip adds up to totally bogus. It probably has two full liners as well. The saber grind G-10 models were unlined. Spyderco has never made parts that could be Frankensteined into that knife. It's a Chinese counterfeit.

Edit to add: stillshot2 is correct about the bug being off as well. Zooming in on your picture, I can see the "mouth" is a single vertical line, not a triangle as the real thing, another hallmark of the Chinese fakes.

It has been years since I purchased a new knife (with the exception since I rejoined Blade Forums this year) and I didn’t even realize there were Spyderco fakes, much less soooooo many. I’m sure there’s fakes of a lot knives now. Just knew about the fake Microtech OTF’s in the past, not all the others out there now.

I did notice the logo wasn’t centered with the Spydie hole as well. Didn’t catch the bug mouth.

Was searching for fakes last night and how to tell. I was testing the lock putting some forward pressure checking the play on the blade with just my hand and SNAP! Oops, well I guess buyer beware. I know now at least……

Thanks for the info guys. Looking through the “Fakes” thread, I can’t believe how many fakes are out there and how close they are. They used to be pretty obvious.

Sorry you got taken. Looks like that one is out of circulation anyway. Sal told me he's been fighting fakes almost as long as he's been making knives. Some of them are really close.

Aw man, that sucks. I paid $150 for a Benchmade mini griptilian in 20CV with grey/blue scales on eBay a month or two ago, and it took me a day or two to recognize it was a fake. I got all my money back. I messaged the seller with a 25 point list of what was wrong, with pictures backing them up (also posted the pics here in the Benchmade fake thread). The seller was like a thrift shop that didn't just sell knives, and had no idea it was fake.

The next week I got a PM2 for $80 and recognized it as a fake immediately - the black blade wasn't PVD or DLC, but some other coating, and almost had an orange peel like paint. The action was slow and tight, and I could not flick it open due to the resistance, and it was listed as brand new unused. I got my money back on that as well. I didn't even need pics to get the refund, the guy selling it knew it was as fake.

Hey I do apologize I sold you a fake. If I had known I would never have sold it. I’m gonna PM you here shortly l.
You are not the first one to be taken in by that fake, and probably won't be the last. I saw one on eBay a while back, contacted the seller and let her know it was a fake. She pulled it right away, but a month later she posted it again, this time with a disclaimer that it might be a fake, and some poor sap bid it up to $170 or thereabouts.
