One of my all time favorite knives is the spyderco police model. I have had several over the years. They have all be the stainless handled models. I have recently been looking for one in G-10 Plain edge, but I don't want mint. I want to carry and use this knife, and therefore I really don't want to pay the money for a collector's item. I also like the slim profile of the ss police, and don't think that I will get that with the g-10 verson. Plus, g-10 without liners worries me that the clip screws will eventually strip the g-10. I was thinking that, instead of buying the g-10 police, that maybe I should get a cheap plain edge ss police, and customize it myself. I have had difficulty deploying g-10 from IWB carry due to the friction of it, and think that the ss would draw quicker. My brother dremeled a ss delica, jimping the rear portion of the hole hump, and the handle just behind the ricasso. It gave superb grip to the knife in a saber grip. Has anyone done this with a police?

thanks

Hello!

I have not doe what you have mentioned to a folder, though for a modification project it is a great one to start with. Just remove the stainless scales, trace the shape(s) on g-10, drill your holes, then cut out the g-10 and shape it!

Two points: though you are probably aware of this, g-10 is very hazardous to your lungs, so you should have a respirator while working it.

Second, forumite STR has done numerous projects like you have mentioned. One way he has improved the "threading into g-10" problem is by adding a small metal plate into the g-10. All you do is get some thin steel or titanium (though steel would be easier, but use what is handy) and you use that dremel to inlay it into the inside of the knife where you'll be adding clip screws. You want to dremel the shape of the steel plate out to its exact depth too, so that it can be epoxied into the inside of the scale nice and flush. If you have a powered grinder of some sorts (even the dremel could do) you can have the plate stick out of the handle surface and then grind/sand it flush. Then you drill and tap that metal piece for your clip screws.

Good luck with your project!

See if you can find yourself one of the 1000 they made with VG10 blades and carbon fiber handles. To me, that carbon fiber made ALL the difference in how much better the knife balances. The old stainless versions(while excellent knives) were really handle heavy and the less expensive stainless G2 blades didn't hold an edge all that well, IMO.

If you don't mind a slightly larger handle just cut and superglue the G10 over the existing roughed up aluminum scales and then sand and polish the G10's edges. It's redneck engineering for sure but it is easy and accomplishes the task you want to do.
