Spyderco Police - Stainless or G10?

I've had the Police on my 'To get' list for a while. I'd never considered the stainless handled model as I thought it would be too slippery in the hand. But then I picked up a stainless handled Delica at a bargain price and I can't believe how beautifully it handles.

So now I'm confused - should I get the G10 handled Police? Or the stainless handled model? The stainless will go nicely with the Delica as a set.

Where I stay there's just no chance of me handling either of them. It's mail-order only!

Any and all opinions will be most welcome!

I think the stainless is a classic choice, also. Thats why I have one. It's pretty secure in the hand for being "slick".

Once in the hand, it's pretty secure.:)
Mine worked well, and has seen a fair bit of use from my friend who has it now.
I need to get another one...love the blade shape.

Thanks fellas!
Stainless seems to be winning!
As stated above - it looks like a classic...and so elegant!

How is the blade tip? Any of you have any problems? (Yeah, I'm nit-picking now....)
And, no I don't pry with my knives!

I think the length of the blade results in a lot of real estate between your fingers and the tip....for this reason I would actually vote for the finger choil (G-10 model). It is not often that I would be doing fine work with a blade this long, but having that choil when needed would actually be a benefit (this is coming from a guy that generally is fairly indifferent to finger choils).

Opinions vary, but now you have mine.

Although the SS Police is a classic Spyder, I prefer the grip the G10....YMMV.

I like the stainless model for inside the waistband carry. I find it easier to put away and draw from that position, and less irritating to carry there. For actaul use, I like the G-10 Police 3 because the very features that make it less suited to IWB carry make it more secure in hand for use.

Both models are over the legal blade length limit for carry here, so check your local laws.

Both flavors have their own appeal. I would lean toward the G10, as it is grippy and the stainless is slick. But I have both models (of course :)) and the stainless is not without its merits.

I bought a user stainless model a couple of years ago from someone here whose name I forgot, that had plenty of wear on it. He had used it all over Europe as I recall, and begged me to sell it back to him. Eventually I cracked and sold it to him, but I did buy for myself the stainless versions in both PE and SE.

So, the G10 is grippy, and the stainless is thinner and has a very industrial, mechanical flavor to it.

i bought the G10 police3, my sweaty hands don't appeal to my SS Endura3 since its usually pretty hot

I just got out my stainless Police, and remembered why I don't carry it. Its both heavier and slicker - much slicker - than the G10 flavor.

The stainless does have that industrial, mechanical thing going for it, but from a functional perspective the G10 is both lighter and more grippy, and I think for most folks that makes it more attractive.

Big vote for the G10 here. You get a finger choil , a nice index groove, & a slight increase in length (see pic above on far left) on top of the superior grip. And it's still thinner than any folder near it's size. Carries better than most 3 1/2 inchers.

I can see where this is going...I'm going to have to get both models!
But it shows what a classic this model is.
Years after first being produced and it's still popular.
Thanks for the opinions guys, much appreciated.

Since I vastly prefer the aesthetics of the hollow grind and swedge of the Police compared to the P3's FFG, I'd have to say... that CF version in Yab's picture. ;)

I'd love to see another run like that with CF or G-10 handles.

I'm not sure it sells enough these days to justify Spyderco kicking out a sprint run but I'd definitely be near the front of that line if they did. I've considered getting a second Police 3 & having Custom Scale Division do something to it in the meantime.

Sal posted a while back that the C07 Police in stainless had been in their top 10 sellers since it was introduced in 1984. The people who buy them seem to like them that way, since the G-10 was a market flop the first two times. The P3 seems to be selling well, but it is a very different knife than the stainless.

I have both and prefer the G10. Not only is the stainless slicker to the grip, if you carry it a lot it has a tendency to get scratched up. Like this

The Police 3 seems more like a lock-back Military to me. As much as I like the shape of the original, I need G-10 to feel comfortable working with the knife on a regular basis.
