I am thinking of getting a Spyderco Poliwog as my main edc knife. it looks very well engineered and is the perfect blade length (living in the UK sub 3" blades are the only way to go).
What do you guys all think of the Poliwog?

I thought you couldn't carry a locking knife in the UK. Anyway.....I personally do not care for the Polliwog either, as it does not please me aesthetically.

Not a fan of the poliwog itself, but I'm really interested in the new locking mechanism. One of my favorite features of Spyderco knives is the lack of a thumbstud that most knives have. I carry my clip knives inside the waistband and I've suffered through many a thumbstud digging into my side. My favorite profile knife is really anything that Spyderco makes with the SS handles. They're very thin and comfortable. The new lock on the Poliwog looks like it's very similar to the Axis and that's interesting to me. I'd love to see some data on how the two locks compare.

While I don't have one nor have I ever handled one I'm pretty impressed with the design. I'd like to pick one up eventually when the funds permit. Here's a link to a review done by Cliff Stamp.

He gave it good workout from the looks of things and seemed to be fairly impressed with it. Hope this helps.

Take care. Heath

I have one and I love it. It has great fit and finish. The VG-10 blade keeps an edge for a very long time. It is a great little knife with a small blade but handles chores like a bigger knife. I honestly believe you will not be unhappy if purchase one. It is in my EDC rotation with a Lochsa an XM-18 and a Lambert Inferno if that tells you anything. If you have any question feel free to ask, but I like the polliwog a lot and would recommend it to anyone.

Carrying one EDC as I type.

I like it alot.

The ergos are better than most other Stainless Spyderco Knives, maybe the Lava's ergos are a bit better.

The Ball Bearing lock I like and have liked since they introduced it on their D'Allara rescue.

The VG-10 holds a tremendous edge, and has so far needed very little touch up.

Lack of a lanyard hole really doesn't bother me, and I prefer the wire clip to a solid.

That being said:

When closed the whole package is a little wide...and fills up the top part of a pocket if you got it clipped, slowing access to anything deeper in the pocket.

However I find it rides pretty securely in the fifth "watch" pocket of jeans no problem.

I recommend the Poliwog...It is one of my favorites.

I like the looks of it. But don't let the thoughts of others influence you. If you like it, get it. 'Nuff said. :)

I agree completely. I love my Poliwog. I used to look at it as a fairly ugly knife with a small following... Picked one up cheap, and I am a convert. I also have a Spyderco Lava that is fantastic as well. I trade off between the Poliwog and Lava as my main EDCs... Throw the Spyderco Spin in the mix every once in a while too. But the Poliwog is my favorite...

I too have one and carry it with some frequency. The design is clever. It's a bit heavier and wider that I thought it would be when I ordered it. It carries fine in denim jeans, but it's a bit heavy for lighter weight material pants (e.g., worsted wool, dress pants, etc.). Because of it's design, it attracts some attention if others see me using it. Acquaintenances at my office see it more as a "curiosity" than a knife.

Now that I have handled and used it some... if I ever lose it, I don't think I'd buy another. The novelty of it has worn off some, and I think other designs are more useful (e.g., Calypso, Jr.).

Irrespective of blade length, locking knives are illegal for EDC in the UK unless you have a specific good reason for so doing.

For a quality, street-legal UK EDC, I can heartily recommend either the Spyderco UK Penknife or the Spyderco Pride.

It's easy one hand open and close. Ball lock is solid and strong. Blade shape is utiliatrian, like a little native. The ergos on Eric Glesser's design are excellent. It's a little heavy. But I like that. No bladeplay whatsoever. I wish it had a G-10 handle to make it a little lighter. But other than that, I have no complaints.

Are you sure? I have reviewed the Criminal Justice Act which states "The Criminal Justice Act (1988) says that you may carry a knife with a blade length of 3.0" or less so long as it is capable of folding."

I haven't done the research, but Spyderco specifically made the UK Pen knife to bring a legal knife to the UK buyers. I imagine that they've done their research and they already had plenty of 3" bladed knives prior to making it. FWIW, the UK Pen Knife is a great design.

Oh yeah, I like the Poliwog. Before handling it, I hated how it looked. But once I held one, that didn't matter anymore.
