i just recently started to collect knives and i have a spyderco harpy and kiwi, and one thing i worry about is when i close them. they just snap shut and it seems like the blade is hitting the inside of the knife pretty hard and im worried it's going to damage the blade, is this a problem or am i just worrying for no reason.

Check to see if the edge is reflecting light anywhere, or is dulled. If that's the case then the blades are hitting, if not don't worry about it. Btw, welcome to the forums.

Hi Psyiko, Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Spyderco designs (with few exceptions) are designed so the "kick" hits the lock bar before the edge hits the spring holder. This keeps the edge from becoming damaged when the blade closes.

I had that problem with the Harpy. It would dull the tip of blade and leave a small nick in the backspacer. I filed it down with the Leatherman file and all is well.

I had to take apart my Centofante Vesuvius and use a Dremel drill with a grinder bit to cut a groove in the aft-most spacer so that it gave clearance about what, a 1/4" from the blade tip. Closing the knife put the edge in contact with that spacer. :grumpy: I was pretty upset about it but then glad that I was able to rectify it.

Sal, you make excellent knives, but I had to wonder how Frank missed this problem when designing the knife... Isn't that kind of stuff all blueprinted out? (I'm no knifemaker, but I'd be really anal about checking for that sort of thing if I were, or if I come to be.)

Blue skies,
-Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey. We use the "kick" to stop the blade in the closed position.

Frank didn't want to use a "Kick" because he wanted to have as much cutting edge as possible.
