I am new to the Blade Forum and until recently I have never seen a reference to the Amsterdam Meet. Would someone be willing to explain what the Meet is, why Spyderco creates prototypes, and how the Meet and the prototypes are related?

And are these prototypes (or some derivation thereof) going to be available for sale to the public at some time in the future?
Thanks!

The Amsterdam Meet is an event held each spring for the past several years. It is a meet and greet type affair to show a group of knife aficionados prototypes of new models to gauge interest. Prototypes are made as part of the development process, they don't just throw random parts together and start producing them by the hundred. Prototypes are used for design testing and refinement (finding and correcting design flaws) as well as refining manufacturing techniques. A new concept may go through dozens of prototypes during development before a final design goes into production. Often these new concepts are also passed around the Meet to see if there may be sufficient interest to move forward with them, although concept models are not allowed to be photographed. The ones we get to see courtesy of Mr. Blonde's hard work and photography skills are usually production prototypes, meaning they are close to final form and likely to be going into production within a year or two.
