Hello everyone

Bit sad and confused at the same time.

Managed to purchase Province in 4V and used it this aft in my garden doing some light chopping on birch log just a bit thicker than my wrist.
No huge swings, more just a weigth of the knife itself. It was bitting nicely but after few swings I have inapected the blade and there was 7 or 8 places where steel rolled at the 1 to 1.5 inch of the blade which was connecting with the wood.

Really dont know what to think.

I defo didnt go crazy and 8 am very dissappointed with the performance.

Thoughts??

What is even more confusing that I just used the same log and chopped it with my cheap kitchen knife and my Mora carbon and there is no sign of any rolling on those blades

Sorry, struggling to post photos. Will try to find the guide.

No rolls on either kitchen knife or Mora

What I have been advised on manufacturer forum is not to judge the performance by factory edge.
As advised, I resharpened the knife and tried again chopping and only one roll occured on different point of blade. No further issues on initially affected area.

Is that something common? Machined grinding overheats and weakens the factory edge and the good stuff shows after few sharpenings.....or......am I trying convince myself here?

Nice looking blade.

For that kind of cheddar I would probably send it back before sharpening so Spyderco could evaluate the blade.

That said, many of my large blades experience chipping during their first use.

A good sharpening and a bit of convexing the edge lessens further damage.

That's also what I read about factory edges. Returning the knife is no longer an option since you've used and sharpened it. I am not a fixed blade guy but a convex edge or a micro bevel might help?

I think I just need to use the knife and see what happens, if i am getting the same issue time and time again i might need to contact Spyderco and seek some resolution.
It is not a £50 knife, expected great things from 4v

Hello again Michal,

You might send it back to us to see what's going on? Where are you?

My experience with 4V so far has been much different. If the issue doesn't go away after sharpening a few times, I'd send it back.

Ive had a Spyderco Delica in VG10 have a bit of rolling right at the apex. It had a wicked sharp wire edge. First time I sharpened the edge, the issuse went away.

Not the only knife, or steel I've had with just a bit of apex weakness thst needed to be sharpened away.

I've even had a custom knife or two that had the issue until sharpened.

That is one of the reasons some custom knife makers finish off sharpening on stones.

I can get pretty wicked sharp edges off my belt sander, but I've also burned some steel, and had to reprofile/touch up on stones to fix.

With being in England, shipping back would be a bummer. I would probably sharpen the whole edge, and see if the problem goes away.

Michal,
Don’t despair. They put the factory edge on with uncooled belt sanders. The miracle is that the temper isn’t ruined deeper than it is. A sharpening or two later it will be completely different. Also, birch wood is very hard. That stuff is no joke for any knife.
Good luck and don’t let a belt sander anywhere near it.
