Spyderco: Real vs. Imitation

Hi guys,

I've seen a lot of threads from people who have purchased Spydercos wondering if they are fake. Some have been, and easily identifiable by some forumites.

Can some members post some side by side pics of real vs. fake (I guess you'd have to knowingly have kept a fake one, which is unlikely I guess). I see that oftentimes the placement of the hole, and the way the spyder logo looks are telltale. I stared at a fake logo for awhile last night and couldn't really see the difference, although I didn't go grab one of my real Spydies to try and compare. Just looking to spot these subtle differences for my own edification.

Also check youtube, lots of videos on the subject with side by side comparisons.

Awesome, thanks so far guys. My goodness they really do their work, at least up to a visual point. Craytab I am guessing even the Cabela's workers didn't know they'd been ripped off? I find this is often the case when I discover faked electronics, mostly copied from Microsoft. Not only do they look authentic, they work ALMOST exactly like they are supposed to!

Support legitimate knife dealers and it would be incredibly unlikely for you to ever end up with a fake.

Most of the "Is my knife a fake?" posts start with "I got a really good deal on an auction site...".

This is where it all starts...fleaBay, alibaba....even Amazon has had problems with fakes, though I suspect it's due to unscrupulous louses who knowingly purchased a legitimate knife from them, and returned a fake knife in its place.

Yes, the workers had no idea that someone had returned 2 fakes. I was in talking with the knife guy and showed him my PM2. He went and got one that was not on the floor yet. I could tell immediately it was fake for all the reasons I listed in that thread. I went back a week later and sure enough they were fake and they are going to change their inspection policy on returned items.

While this is true almost 99% of the time the example I cite in my earlier post shows how fakes can get mixed in to legitimate stock. Everyone should still be aware that fakes could be anywhere and do some research after a purchase from a legit dealer to confirm authenticity. It sucks, but this is the world we live in.

There are plenty of legit deals on auction sites, no doubt about it. I purchase many knives from various auction sites, and never purchase a knife that isn't on the secondary market. "the bay" actually has amazing dealers, if one is diligent and does their homework, but that's all I'll say about that.

All that said, this post isn't because I am planning on buying a dubious knife, it's simply because I want to spot the differences.

Exactly. Heck, the resource thread on fakes listed some very, very obvious fakes that we as knife knuts could spot as cheap imitation even out of our peripheral vision... I just wanted to get some resources to be able to spot the ones that actually try, which seem to be getting better all the time.
