A vintage Spyderco, of which Im a fan, is the old Renegade (quite like the smaller Blackhawk as well, though the Renegade is my favorite of the two).

Supposedly made to cater to the biker crowd (I ride bikes, though thats not why I like it:)).

I favor the elegant sweeping blade on the Renegade and the long clip/trailing point. Its a beaut.

I noticed a recent posting by Barman1 and these are his pics (Renegade second from right).

It looks like, the Renegade has no liners like several other Spyderco offerings over the years.

How does this work for the Renegade - does anybody has any user experience with this knife?

Any and all Renegade comments & pics welcome, as its a beaut of a knife IMO.

I have a spyderedge renegade and it indeed does not have liners. The lock pins right into the g10 and it has a full length metal backspacer. Keeps weight down and works well.

Thanks for input, gents.

Good to hear.

As for other knives, well, there is the Goddard, of which Im a fan as well as Im a fan of the Renegade.

Will have to search for a Renegade. I missed the one pictured.

Thanks. Interesting to hear that the Blackhawk is of different design.

Good pics. Too bad I missed the Renegade, you had FS.

I really like the blade shape and design of the Blackhawk and Renegade and would like to see a similar model with full liners at some point.

First of all "BladeScout" I want to thank you for doing this thread. I've been a big fan of the RENEGADE model going all the way back to 2004 when I landed my first one. I've owned 4 of them all together and I even EDCed one for almost a year before I got a used C-44 Dyad which quickly became one of my all time favorite EDC Spyders. In other words it took one helluva Spyderco folder to knock it out of EDC rotation for me.

There are some things that very few of the current crowd here at BF are aware of concerning the RENEGADE & BLACKHAWK models. They are among the very few Spyderco models that were at one time made at the GOLDEN, CO USA Earth plant as well as being made over at the Japan facility as well. Also I believe it was the very first ( or among the first) Spyderco folders offered with a G-10 handle. I had a set of those models made at the GOLDEN plant and deeply regret trading them because they are getting extremely hard to find now. The Japan made models were very high quality

If they would ever bring back the RENEGADE in a Sprint Run with one of the newer supersteels I would be all over it in a heartbeat. I too loved the overall blade design of the RENEGADE but the antiquated GIN-1 blade steel they had doesn't hold a candle to some of these newer/better blade steels that they have now.

YES!! I do believe that the RENEGADE model should be high on the list of Sprint Run candidates. A RENEGADE with M390, M-4 or even XHP would make for a really stellar EDC folder in my humble opinion.

No problem

And thank you for the interesting info on the Renegade:thumbup:

The Dyad is a peculiar looking knife but also very nice IMO.

And yes; puhhleezee bring back the Renegade - Im a biker and I need it (though not necessarily for when riding):D

Being the RENEGADE model was probably the very first Spyderco folder to be offered with G-10 scales>> that alone should make it a candidate to be used in a Sprint Run IMO. There are so many of the older, discontinued models that would make excellent Sprint Runs but few would also make an excellent EDC folder like the RENEGADE would. I too prefer it over it's little brother the BLACKHAWK model because I just simply need a longer blade for most of the cutting chores I encounter on my current job.

Right at this time I'm carrying a C-36 Military model with M390 blade steel and it's been a super EDC folder. But the RENEGADE had a streamlined handle that would really grow on you after using it a lot. It just goes with that one thread I started>> It's one of the Spyderco folders "That They Had It Right The First Time" with the slight exception of a newer/better blade steel.

It would also be very interesting to see how the newer G-10 material would work on that model as well.

Hopefully if sales for the 2017 "throwbacks" are high, Spyderco could delve deeper into the vault. I have a soft spot for the older discontinued Spydies... they're just so cool

You're so right on about that "Kniferbro" because that's the main reason I've gravitated toward many of the older Spyderco models as being my favorites. And yes I am putting my money where my mouth is because this very day I'm carrying a C-36 Military (M390) and an ATS-55 era stainless handled RESCUE model as my EDCs and probably will be for the next week or so.

The Spyderco C-60 Ayoob ( one of my all time favorite EDCs) is one of the very few older Spyderco models that I can safely say has better ergos than the RENEGADE model. But few others do.

Many of these older gems with newer/better materials would blow away many of the newer models we've seen in the past two to three years>> at least that's the way I'm seeing it and I obviously have others that agree with me ;)

Yeah, the Renegade certainly has features, which I really like - a new run would be fantastic.

Mas knows guns and I have no reason to believe, that he wouldnt know his way around a SD knife as well.

The Ayoob is just made for a very specific -ahem- purpose and might not score high in the general utility department.

The Ayoob is no doubt a fine knife. Id just rather have the Renegade YMMW.

There were some distinct differences between the RENEGADE model made at the GOLDEN, CO USA Earth plant and the ones that they later got from Japan. Now the GIN-1 blade steel was from what I"m told was an exclusive Japanese made blade steel. I really liked GIN-1 with serrated edges but for plain edges I thought it had a lot to be desired. Even ATS-34 which was available in that time period was actually a significantly better blade steel IMO.

Not trying to be redundant but to see a revamped version of the RENEGADE to be brought back as a Sprint Run with a newer/better premium blade steel and a newer/better G-10 handle would be super and I do believe that they would be sold very quickly.

Also the full Spyderedged version of the RENEGADE was truly a beast of a folder  I even had a RENEGADE in COMBO EDGE which was the one I EDCed for quite a while. There were a lot of great models during that GIN-1 era which if they were to be brought back in either a test run or Sprint Run I'm sure would be high in demand. And YES!! I would love to see a SPRINT RUN of the RENEGADE made at the GOLDEN plant if I had my choice.

I almost forgot about this model.
If this puppy was done with a power lock or compression lock revival made in the USA I will buy one. That is a mean looking tool and has a finger choil to boot.

I own examples of both the Blackhawk and Renegade and, to me,, the Blackhawk is the better looking knife of the two. I've always felt the Renegade, like overly stretched limousines, looks ungainly. That, plus the fact they share the dubious distinction of being the two least lefty friendly midlocks Spyderco ever made, has kept them out of my pocket and confined to my display case. As for the unlined G-10 handles, although they had a significant advantage in terms of weight, Spyderco stopped using them, along with unlined Micarta and CF, after it became apparent none of them retained clip screws particularly well. They didn't resurface until wire clips retained by a through bolt came into vogue.

You make some good points there Deacon and I too believe that if they would do a Sprint Run of either the RENEGADE and/or the BLACKHAWK then they should consider doing them with liners this go around. Personally I don't think liners add enough weight to be a bother to anyone unless they are just looking for something to gripe about .

I do like both the RENEGADE and BLACKHAWK models but I personally like the RENEGADE much better because for the type of work I usually do with a knife a longer blade is much to my advantage most of the time.

Yeah if they did the RENEGADE with liners and one of the newer/better blade steels it would be a very enticing model for a Sprint Run at least.
