Spyderco: Replaceable Folding Utility knife?

Just wondering if Spyderco is considering making a folding utility knife with a replaceable blade?

I think this would be a very handy knife to have at work, this way you are not worried about cutting into a box and hitting a staple or steel banding straps. With your prized Dodo/Millitary/Manix etc., if you nick the blade badly. Just turn the replaceable blade around and use the other side or put in a new blade.

All the ones I have seen at hardware stores are rather clunky and bulky, hard to open, and not a very sleek design.

I know if Spyderco made one they would do it Right, say something along the size of a Dodo. I also think it would be cool if it could handle a hooked disposable blade.

Replaceable folding utility knife by Spyderco?

Check the Byrd line.

Seriously though, I want to buy one of those Superknives, but the only thing holding me back is the fact that there isn't a Spyder on them.

Hi Scorpius,

Funny you should mention that. We've been thinking about the prospect.

It would be cool to have a Spyderco utility knife! With G10! Waved! I would use it all of the time. I don't use my EDC knives for a lot of things because I don't want to jack up the blade, but most utility knives suck it hard. I just bought another "heavy duty" X-acto utility knife, and it is a complete POS. (granted it was only $9.) I use utility knives all the time in my work (I'm an artist) and I'm continually frustrated with their suckiness. I would certainly shell out for a decent utility knife that would last a lifetime. I'd have to buy two, because my wife would steal the first one.

I'd like a quality utility folding knife that's easily pocketable. I've gone through a few and despite some nice design touches, they all tend to fall apart. The Superknife has gotten some very mixed reviews, I have a Meyerco that wouldn't accept most blades and eventually fell apart, and a Camco assisted opener that had scales falling off (and basically unfixable) out of the box, and was fairly thick in the pocket. I always go back to the old fashioned $2 retractable version from Harbor Freight that unscrews to change blades and holds spares inside. It's large and clunky, but dependable.

A slim Spydie or Byrd would be pretty nice.

This is something I have been in the market for. Everything that I have seen so far hasn't really fit the bill, they're clunky, bulky, and cheap feeling. My G-10 Cara Cara has been filling that hard use utility role for me, but it is too nice a knife in spite of the cheap price for me to abuse it like I would a razor. I'm sure Sal & co. can come up with a real nice design (with the irreplaceable round hole!) and some unique, utilitarian features that will make it a must have.

That is a great idea.
I bought one at Sears a few years ago and gave it to our warehouseman, because I hated it so much. (Cheep, tacky, hard to use)
I would like a "quality" piece, though.

Sal, glad to hear you are considering this. Just take your ordinary folding utility knife and SPYDERIZE it and I know it well be a well designed, quality product.

Besides the disposable hooked blade option, I would want it to have the wire cilp, the chromed version works the best IMHO.

The wire clip is the main reason I carry my Merkat at work versus my prerfered work blade which is the G10 Harpy. I like it's non scratching smooth corner's and the fact it does not catch on things.

For $40 for a Delica - what is not replaceable? Mass produced .... And as has been mentioned there is the even cheaper crow line.

If you consider yours for some reason to be extra special collectable - then treat it as such and get something else as your user.

For what I would expect the replacement/replaceable blades to cost it would not be much more at all to simply get another knife. So use them and buy another when the time comes..... I am sure Sal will be making more! :)

Sal I would really enjoy something like this.

The $10 cheapies from Home Depot just dont cut it (no pun intended).

A lightweight, THIN (all the one's I've used are thick and very wide), one hand open w/ sturdy lockback, replacable utility blade knife from you is something I would definitely invest in.

I would think you could make them fairly cheap too, FRN handles and a lock is really all ya need.

Just some input for you, I know you're one of the few who actually pay attention to customer ideas, so I'm doing my part.

I'd like to sit in the shade of your money tree for a little while.

I honestly don't see a point in Spyderco doing this. The cutters as a whole are considered about as replaceable as the blades that go in them. I've got a Craftsman brand. It has studs, lockback, pocket clip, and it's thick enough for the mechanism that holds the blade in place, and to give me something to grip behind that very thin and cheap blade.

FWIW, it seems Gerber has come out with a utility knife that looks refreshingly original. It's on the new Walmart knife display card. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock when I dropped by today, I can't tell if it locks. However, it seems to fold smaller than the typical Superknife-type folder and seems to utilize a longer section of cutting edge. It has an integrated clip and seems to use a small Phillips to hold the blade in. Runs about $10.

Our Wal-Mart had them in stock. After I threatened to open the knife case myself, they finally got someone around to wait on the customers in Sporting Goods (I was one of four at that moment)
Yes, it locks (sort of). Liner lock, which could use a little work on this one. Folds to an inch wide by 2 3/4 long, under a quarter inch thick without the clip. Very compact unit, but it really needs a Spyderhole!

I love the idea of a QUALITY folding utility knife. One feature that is lacking on most of the ones now is spare blade storage. 1 or 2 spare blades stored in the handle is plenty. Also, I feel that tooless blade changes are a requirement.

has anyone looked at the sheffield folding utility knife? pretty hot for 12$, if spyderco could make a similar one with an easier way to open, (it had a thumbstud but was too tight for me to open with both thumbs...)

Yep, I have Sheffield, Husky and Superknife. The Superknife is relatively light, the others are a lot of weight to lug around for 1" of mediocre blade steel with a mediocre edge (unless you sharpen your new utility knife blades like I do  )

Edited to add: What we REALLY need is Spyderco utility knife BLADES! How cool woud it be to pull out a new blade and have it actually be sharp?
