Hey!
I am very interested in obtaining a Spyderco with a plain edge reverse s style blade. I have been trying to look at all of the models, but I can't seem to find a site that will show me all of Spyderco's knives with that blade type. Can anyone show me a link that shows that? At the moment, I have looked at the Meerkat, the Civilian, the Matriarch, and the Cricket(which is my favorite so far. What knife would you reccomend, and exactly how many different models does spyderco have with that blade type?
Thanks!

The Spyderco Civilian and Matriarch are not designed to be used as utility knives. The overall size and bladeshape does not lend itself to ordinary cutting tasks that one would encounter on a day to day basis. The Cricket is much better choice because of its size. Definitely a powerful little cutter. If yu require a knife that will be primarily used for pulling cuts, consider a hawkbill bladeshape as well. If yu browse to the spyderco site, you can search their catalog and find virtually any knife they have ever made, there is also the spydiewiki, and other sources via searching the forums and google.

Actually, I think the only two you're missing of the true reverse-s curve Spydies are the Spot and Dodo.

I would agree with RevDevil - the Matriarch and Civilian are a little bit too specialized of blades for regular utility usage. The only people I know that regularly carry those blades for day-to-day work on movie sets - apparently the blade shapes lend themselves to cutting gaffers tape really, really well. The Cricket is great for all kinds of things.

Hmm ok. I thought about the Dodo, but I figured it would be ridiculously expensive. My main concern for the Cricket is that the frame lock will not be very strong. Also, which model of Cricket is the best? I would like to get the black plain blade FRN model, but I am afraid that that lock will actually be weaker than the stainless steel version.
Thanks

I would love to know what you're doing with a knife the size of a Cricket that you think lock strength is going to be an issue.

This idea of frame locks and liner locks being weak or unreliable simply isn't true, unless you're using $2 gas station Chinese no-name knives. Even then I can point to plenty of Chinese-made knives with excellent liner locks (anything in Kershaw's Chinese line, the Spyderco Tenacious line, the Byrd line knives with liner locks, the CRKT Chinese line with liner locks, etc, etc, etc, etc).

Reverse S MeerKat - discontinued.
FRN Cricket - discontinued.
Dodo - discontinued.
Spot - discontinued.
Matriarch PE - Sprint Run (a.k.a. discontinued)
Civilian PE - Sprint Run (a.k.a. discontinued)
SS Cricket PE - current production.

Unless you want to shop the secondary market and pay collector price for a knife you intend to use, the SS Cricket is pretty much your only choice. As mentioned, the Civilian and Matriarch are not intended for utility use, as the thin tips are likely to break. However, those "thin tips" are twice as thick as the tip on the main blade of the Schrade 8OT stockman I've been using since the 70's. Granted, VG-10 is a lot more brittle than 1095, and I know how to use a thin blade without breaking it, but I would have no worries using either of those blades for daily tasks. Frankly, I find a hawkbill far more useful than the Reverse-S.
