Hello everyone. After lurking for a long time, I've decided to do my first post today. I have recently acquired a Spyderco Caspian 2 and a Spyderco Pacific Salt SE and I've been really impressed by the H1 steel so far. I know this year new H1 models (ARK) or older versions (Aqua Salt) are hitting the market. The quesiton is: Are there any plans of re-releasing the Rock Salt? Any real possibilities of having this Fixed BLade in H1 available in the next years? I am not interested in the VG10 version and maybe you folks (or, who knows, Mr. Glesser himself) can tell me about any plans of seeing this beautiful blade again.
Thanks A LOT in advance.

BTW: This is a great, great forum

I would say it's very unlikely. To the best of my knowledge once Spyderco finishes production of a model it doesn't come back. Sprint runs are always a possibility but it would most likely be a different steel or handle material than was used in the past productions.

Thanks. Any opinions or experiences from you guys? How would it perform as a ‘one knife only' option? Let's say for camp chores, kitchen, utility and as a self defense tool? I am planning a trip and considering it an option to pack light and (essential point) rust proof carrying it to compliment my pacific salt. Any help would be appreciated, especially considering its price ($400 here on my country)
Thanks again!

Are you going to be right on the ocean during these different scenarios? Vg-10 has excellent corrosion resistance, so the Vg-10 versions may suit your needs if not right in a marine environment. I really prefer my Vg-10 over H1.

Spain, I am traveling to a coastal-Island environment with high humidity 24/7. I need the knife to be able to cut small branches, plastic, ropes and chop small to medium pieces of semi decomposed wood.
Seems the right choice to me.
Other blades like the aqua salt or my pacific salt lack the mass and strength to do some of those things...

Know that the Rock Salt is ground from thin stock. It was made for general camp chores, including light chopping, but it doesn't have a heavy blade. Don't think it will make a good substitute for a machete. Very small branches, sure. 2 cm. branches, maybe if your technique is good. Bigger than that, it will chew through them eventually if you keep at it, but don't envision popping them off with a single snap cut. Other than that, it should work fine. Frankly, I prefer the VG-10 Schempp Rock to the Rock Salt, but I live out here where humidity is unusual, and salt air is a thousand miles away, so I really don't need the extra corrosion resistance of H-1.
