Spyderco Rookie, my new favorite

Sure I am discovering this one a little late. I just got my hands on a steel handle, plain edge, new-in-box Rookie, and this is the slickest-looking Spyderco I have. I like the handle shape better than the current Delica and the extra bevel at the end of the spine adds a nice touch.

It's also ATS55 vs. the AUS6 blade on the steel Delica, making the Rookie everything I wished the Delica was.

The only drawback is the Rookie being harder to open. Are the Police models stiffer too, or is it just the hole position of the Rookie?

I hope Spyderco brings this one back some day, at least in a limited FRN run if not a regular steel model. Does anyone else think it's weird that a smaller version of what I thought was a pretty popular Police model did not sell enough to keep it around?

I bought about 10 rookies when SMKW had them on sale. A lot of knife for the dollar. I use one as my most abused EDC. I would also like to see it (or the standard) made again with a little better blade material. This knife is a classic.

the police model is smoother cause the hole is farther from the pivot.

I will reafirm what you have said about the Rookie. I have been collecting Spydercos for some time but it was just a couple of months ago that I got me a Rookie. I can't for the life of me figure out why that knife did not take off. It seems to me like it is litterally the epitome of what Spyderco does best. The only one I have thus far is the G-10 model with a plain edge. But I now want everyone I can get my hands on. :)

I really like the Rookie in G-10. I had bought one when they first came out and on first inspection I really didn't think I would like it. I eventually started to use it and it became my EDC. Now it is in my camping gear and I use it as a folding paring knife and for general cutting in camp. I bought a second one before they were discontinued and it is a bit different. The first version had only G-10 handles with no metal liner and the second one has a metal liner on the clip side. I still have that one put up for future use. I have really put my Rookie through the ringer and it is still very servicable. I really like the size but think that if it were just a bit larger it would have caught on...

I just received a SE G10 Rookie, I always have enjoyed my Police, and the G10 Rookie is nice. It is a little harder to open, smaller hole, but still a nice size knife. Any bigger and it would be a Police. :) Still haven't decided if I'll keep it or trade it off some day. :)

The Rookie is one my favorite Spyderco knives. I have the G-10 and the SS versions. I'm not crazy about the swedge, but really like everything else about it. Seems like the ones I really like always get discontinued.

I think my Rookie may have been sitting in storage for a long time and needed a little oil. It is still a stiff spring, but opens easier now.

Try a Standard for a slightly wider knife (think Calypso) and the same steel. Easier to open because of hole position with respect to scales.

I was also wondering why the Rookie didn't catch. It is a great knife under all aspects.
