Hey everyone,

New to the forums here just wondering what everyone here thinks about the Rookie? Just got mine today and...well not to impressed with blade play vertical/horizontal.

This is my first Spyderco and was planning to use it as an EDC to replace my CQC7 which will be given to a friend who has just been hired for a Police service.

Just wondering if anyone else has play with their lockbacks or did I just get a dud?

Other than the above the knife seems excellent, but just hate the blade wiggles.

Also anything similar to the Rookie other than the Police G10 (too large for EDC) that you guys would recommend? Im thinking about the Salt but would hate to get another lockback if the blade plays going to be an issue.

any help would be great

First thing, check the pivot screw.... Make sure its not too loose.

I have been dieing for a Rookie and have to scoop one up one of these days!

I tightened the pivot it helped slightly but any tighter and it gets hard to deploy. I might just be too picky when it comes to knives, but i do like the Rookie. The blade shape gives the allusion it smaller than it is.

Any Salt owners out there notice any blade play? or other Rookie owners?

My Pac Salt has a little play... it does not affect the performance at all. I'm like you the blade play just buggs me a little so now I try to purchase other locks.

Just sold my Rookie... no play at all. I'd call Spyderco and talk about a possible return, they are great to work with and turn-around is quick.

My Dad's rookie locks up pretty solid.

There is some play with backlock knives and this is acceptable if it doesn't impact the performance. Without holding/seeing your knife this isn't easy to judge. If it's "sloppy" then you should definitely send it back. If it's a fraction of a millimeter and more of a "rattle" it's prob deemed "acceptable".

Before sending it into Spyderco, you might go to a knife shop and hold a few other Spydies (Delica, etc) and see if you experience this same degree of play.

All this said, my guess is the play is a bit excessive based on your response. Most are NOT like this from Spyderco. Goodluck!

If the Rookie was purchased new, I would definitely call Spyderco about it.

The FRN Spydies sometimes come new with a little play, but the SS models

that I've had, never had any. The Rookie should lockup like a vault.

BTW, welcome to Bladeforums!:D

I had a Rookie. I tried four different Rookies at a knife store before I found one with no vert/hor play. Liked the foliage green and one sided liner, but didn't like the blade shape...returned it for a Caly 3 VG10/G10...bigger, more expensive, but lock up is tight and crisp.

it was an on line buy, contacted Spyderco and they said to ship it in to them. I wonder if they will let me upgrade and pay the difference for a liner lock model?? anyway thanks for everyone's help.

Spyderco sells their products at full MSRP to avoid undercutting their authorized dealers. The difference to upgrade might be quite a bit.

I just checked my foliage green Rookie and it has zero blade play in any direction.

Can you tell if the rookie feels lighter than a delica? I'm looking for EDC knife in a size and weight between a delica and a dragonfly and was recommended to get a rookie. they said it is like an mini police model

I own the stainless steel verison and it only has side to side play, but its been well used, perfect light edc size.

Yes the Rookie is new purchased it from a dealer I have used in the past. I was wondering if it would be even worth sending it to Syderco for warranty work because after tightening the pivot(a little stiff using the thumb stud) it locks up OK. what would you guys do? I dont want to wait weeks before I get it back from Spyderco. Anyone interested in a Rookie for trade? lol

It is really like a mini-Police...

Concerning the weight:

Rookie: 63g
Delica FRN: 71g
Dragonfly FRN: 33g
