I have been buying knives for over 20 years now (gawd I'm old) and the second good knife I ever bought was a Spyderco, one of the very first Clip-It models. I am still a huge Spyderco fan today and most of my collection is taken up by Spydie knives. This is why I think Spyderco are the best production knife co on the planet:

1) Outstanding quality
2) They are made to be USED
3) So many to choose from = collecting FUN
4) Considerable bang for your buck, value for money
5) They listen and they respond to our - often crazy - requests
6) Sal Glesser - a true knife guy and a man who really appreciates his customers
7) The Spyder hole and all their other amazing innovations
8) The Sharpmaker (I use it every day)
9) The Spyder lovers community
10) ?

Can anyone think of a 10th reason? I'm sure there must be one. :D

Amen brother. That is why they are kicking everyone's ass in sales.

10. Sal Glesser is a very admirable man. Witness shiny footprints policy. Besides just making good knives his company is an extension of his personality.

Do you have any numbers? I don't think we will ever find out who the actual knife sales leader is but it would probably surprise us knife nuts. Probably smith and wesson. You can look at Amazon and what the most popular selling items are in different categories and I don't think there is a Spyderco in the top 15.

i have to agree that i like spyderco, i would have to say it is my favorite production folder company.

and not to be the wet blanket but i think victorinox has the best sales for knives. they have something like 1000 employees, and make an insane amount of knives that sell all over the world and to non knife people.

I love their ceramic stones for hand sharpening. Also most of the knives LOOK great. Never owned a spyderco, waiting for a few to arrive. Para mil (ergo problems), carbon native, zdp delica, h1 tasman. Waiting to see which will be my first.

I had a Spydercard, for a day. It was an abused blade though, sent back to seller.

I too, really like Spyderco. I doubt they are outselling everyone else. Maybe, but it's just not something you see in every store like Buck, Kershaw or Gerber.

I used a byrd se crossbill today to cut up our living room rug that we are removing....it really just ripped thru the berber carpet ....very impressive

I'd disagree with Spyderco leading in sales actually. It's going to be awhile before anything touches SAKs.

I never really gave Spyderco much of a chance in the past. I had issues with the Spydie hole, but I'm working through them now.
Spyderco makes some damn fine stuff.
Got the Hossom Forester a while back and tested it pretty hard today. It did fabulously. Hands down the best fixed blade I've ever owned.
Recently got the Caly 3 and the Military - no complaints, many compliments.
Yep, Spyderco will only have me saying good things about them.
Gayle Bradley is next.... god... what have you people done to me?

couldn't agree more with this thread. Just picked up my second spydie and am definitely hooked (The Sage). It's such a finely crafted tool.

What kicked me into my knife passion was Benchmade. I was so impressed and enamored with them when I first looked into knives more seriously. And at that time, Spydercos looked a bit too "odd" to attract me.

Over time I kept reading about how wonderful Spydercos are.... finally I decided to check them out.

It didn't take but getting one Spyderco to change all that. In short order, my passion for Benchmades was quickly bulldozed over by my passion for Spydercos. Now I add a new Spyderco model regularly and haven't bought a BM in a long time. And as for carry and general use... my BMs are in the drawer and my Spydercos are out and in daily use.

Current favorite Sypdercos:

These are all clad with sage green G-10 handles: (not a fan of FRN handles and have yet to buy one)

Urban Leaf
UK Pen Knife
Delica FFG G-10
Dragonfly G-10

And funny thing... I NEVER thought I would feel this way, but the slip-its (Urban and UKPK) are every bit as appealing to me as lock models... perhaps moreso!

OK after some thought I think #10 should be:

The Military!

Not only is this one of the most practical and useful production knives ever made but the variety of sprint runs that have been created for this knife make it eminently appealing for collectors and enthusiasts. It is now the ONLY knife in my collection that I have a duplicate of... which tells you something.

I think #10 should be ergonomics. Spyderco designs knife to fit well in hand, that dictates the shape. They don't make knife look aesthetics with crappy ergo's. They make excellent work knives that are pleasure to hold.
