Spyderco Sage 2 question

I've been looking a lot at the Sage 2 and debating whether or not I should buy it. Of course, I really like the titanium framelock and FFG s30v blade. However, I'm left handed.

I know that the Sage 2 drills out a spot for the pocket clip on the other side, but I'm wondering how it handles for a lefty. Even if the pocket clip is reversible, the framelock itself isn't. Also, from the pictures I've seen, the lockbar itself is raised above the other side. The side opposite of the lockbar has a relief grind in it for a righty's thumb to slide to the spyderhole.

How does the knife handle for a lefty? Is opening the knife left handed difficult due to the raised nature of the lockbar? Are there any lefties who have the Sage 2 that could comment on it? I'd welcome any right handers who have the knife to really grip the knife hard in their left hand, maybe cut a few boxes or something, and tell me how it handles for them.

Secondly, I know I'm going to get recommendations to save up for a left handed Sebenza. As a pre-response, I'm going to say that: I prefer the FFG of the Sage 2, and I can't justify the cost of a Sebenza. If I was going to spend $330-385 for a knife, I'd rather buy a Busse or some other custom fixed blade that I've hand my eye on (a Murray Carter neck knife).

Thanks for your replies in advance guys, or gals.

I don't have the sage 2, but the liner lock version handles well in the left hand. I can close it one handed when it's in the right, which is obviously really difficult left handed, but other than that, the ergonomics are actually slightly better in the left hand for me, because of how my finger lays on the cutout for the liner lock. Not sure if the framelock version has the same sort of cutout or not.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

MustardMan: I've handled a lot of right-handed liner locks. Never had a problem manipulating them...but often times the clip wasn't reversible, which prevented me from carrying them. The Sage 1 looks great, but I want to go with a titanium frame-lock. -edit I looked at the Sage 1 and noticed that it too has a raised part opposite of the cutout. You said that it handles a bit better because of the cutout? Why does it do that?

Golden Chicken: I have the FFG g-10 Endura 4, which is a lock-back. I'm kinda looking for a knife that doesn't have g-10 scales, and a large motivator for me is the fact that I don't have titanium framelock yet. Again, mostly because I'm left-handed.

lava_lamp: That's a great review, and almost what I'm looking for, "I'm right-handed, but the Sage 2 seems very lefty-friendly. The Spyderhole is generously sized and easy to access from either side. The clip is reversible." Can you possibly go more in depth? Does the raised lock-bar put a lot of pressure on your fingers when you grip it? Since you are a right-hander (an assumption from the picture of the clips and your review), could you open and close the knife with your left hand several times and tell me if you could foresee any difficulties with accessing the spyderhole? Thanks in advance

I don't have it anymore, but you could ask the next person on the passaround. There is a link to it in the review. I am right-handed and could easily open and close the Sage 2 with my left hand. The hole is easy to access. I can't really comment on the raised lock bar putting any pressure when gripped -- I didn't cut anything with my left hand.

It's not that it handles better because of the cutout - it's that the cutout is slightly uncomfortable in a right handed grip, but it isn't in a left handed grip. It's a very minor thing, and not enough to stop the Sage from being my current EDC, but it is there.

I have both Sage models. I'm right-handed but they both open fine left-handed. There's no issue for me using the hole opener. The CF model closes a bit easier left-handed, but the RIL Sage can be closed lefty, it's just a bit slower and more awkward for me to do it.

:grumpy:My father for my birthday gave an Ed Schemp C104 Kris. This has unfortunately been stolen. 1st question any thoughts on it's worth for insurance purposes? It being discontinued, any recommendations on a something from Spydey that might help fill a huge hole.

Thanks all for your consideration FWIW,

Hobbles
