Hi all,

I'm thinking of picking up a Spyderco Sage with carbon fiber handles and S30V blade. I am wondering what the recommendations are out there on this knife? How does it lockup? How durable is it? etc. etc.

I'm also wondering how grippy the CF scales are. Could someone possibly compare them to a FRN Endura 4 and/or a G10 Military, as far as grippy texture is concerned?

Also, how thick is it overall?

Thank you!

The carbon fiber on the Sage is rather different. It does not have a rough texture the way peel-ply CF or G-10 does. Instead, the weave is raised, giving an effect of checkering yet remaining smooth to the touch. It is not as grippy as the volcano FRN of the Endura, but it does provide good purchase. For a normal person's EDC, it is wonderful.

The knife itself is meticulously crafted. The Walker liner lock uses an offset arc lockface on the blade tang, which is a feature usually found only on high-end knives. The lock-up on mine is very secure and hasn't changed at all since I got it. The thickness is a couple of thousandths of an inch thinner than a CF Military.

+1

I think Yablanowitz summed it up nicely. I really think the Sage CF is supurb and I was shocked to see 'Taiwan' on the blade since it was so well made. It just goes to show that Spyderco has made quality control a top priority. The CF texture feels so good in the hand, it's smooth but also bumpy enough to grippy. I wish Spyderco would do more with this kind of Carbon Fiber!! the Sage overall is slightly larger than the Caly3/UKPK and fills the hand better and is a great EDC blade especially with the Wire clip. Top quality in my opinion and you can't go wrong with the Sage CF.

Just got mine. I have to agree with yablanowitz. The CF is not smooth, but rather bumpy. Gives you some grip on it. Plus the jimping is awesome. F&F is typical Spyderco, no movement what so ever. Fits my hands perfectly. I should note that after the first time you open it, you will be addicted to the sound it makes when it locks open. I am.

If it were not stamped Taiwan, I think everyone would believe this was a U.S. made knife. The quality is unbelievable.

great knife, way more classy than endura which is also a great knife but sage cf is more "gentleman" like, endura I would say is more "country man". finish is incredible.
am waiting to receive the sage II titanium, can't wait

I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with the quality of the Sage 1. It's splendid.

Don't have a CF, but my Ti Sage came in yesterday. I like it so much I'm considering getting the CF as well.

The Walker LL and RIL are my my two favorite locks, so these first two Sage's made will be my favorites.

Love my Sage CF, a great quality knife. In my opinion it is a Gentleman's knife but still more than stout enough to asnwer any tasks you would ask of a knife that size.

Regards.

Got it today! So this is about as perfect of an EDC blade (by my preferences) as I've ever owned, even though I only bought it to be a "gentleman's" knife. I'm seriously tempted to buy another one to keep one looking clean for "dress-up" days and use the other in my EDC rotation.

Slim but doesn't feel small in hand.
Enough texture for a good grip.
The double finger grooves are nice and comfy.
Perfect blade shape (for me).
Spyder hole instead of thumb stud.
Nice low riding clip.
Plenty of jimping.
S30V.
Ridiculously sharp.
Zero blade play.

The only things that would make this better (and I'm being picky here, not really complaining :p) are a USA stamp, a G10 option albeit the carbon fiber is awesome, and maybe tip down carry which feels more natural for me.

This thing is AWESOME!

Sorry a couple of the pics are kinda blurry
