Here's a review for Spyderco's new addition (and mine), the Sage. This has been one of those "it's made in Taiwan, and I only buy Spydies from Seki City or Golden..." and then they hold the thing and they want one. Like the Salsa
This one is a real winner in all categories. Excellent blade steel, excellent handles, great clip, great price. It sells for about $95 in stores, and as mentioned, is made in (Taipei) Taiwan. It weighs 3.2 ounces. The model number is C123CFP.
Unfortunately, mine didn't come with the "thank you for buying a Spyderco knife..." paperwork that I've seen on-line. Here are the details on this excellent piece of cutlery...
Handle Details: The Sage is 4-3/16" closed. It's a four-finger knife for me, and I have large hands. That's when I'm not using the choil. The wire pocket clip is reversible for left or right handed carry, but it's tip up only. It has a black coating on it, which adds a tiny bit of "bling". The liners are stainless steel, and they're very smooth. Not a single sharp spot on them. The blade locks open via linerlock, which is executed perfectly. It doesn't have jimping, but it doesn't need it. This knife will unlock with either hand. The handle scales are carbon fiber, and they're great. It's not smooth like the Caly 3's carbon fiber; it has texture to give you a good grip. But not enough to abrade your hand. The carbon fiber on mine is perfect in fit and finish; not a blemish of any kind. Everything - the handle scales, the pocket clip, and the blade pivot pin - are held in place with some very nice Torx bits. They're all the same size (T-8). The Sage has an open back so you can blow out debris or pocket lint. The back is accented with two hourglass-shaped spacers, which is a very nice touch. The blade rides on a very smooth pivot pin, and has a phosphor bronze bushing on each side of it. Opening of the blade is easy and smooth.
Blade Details: The Sage has a leaf-shaped blade of CPM-S30V, and is 3" long with a 2-5/8" cutting edge. The left side of the blade has the Spyderco bug lasered on near the thumb hole, and "SPYDERCO" above "CPM S30V" on the tang. The right side of the blade says "Taiwan" on the tang. The blade has jimping on the spine and choil. It came out of the box extremely sharp, and only required a slight stropping to whittle hair. Yes, whittle hair. The blade is flat ground, and seems very easy to touch-up. It has a polished finish, and really has to be seen to be appreciated. The Spyderco Round Hole (the thumb hole) is 1/2" in diameter so you can open it without getting carpal tunnel syndrome. The blade is 1/8" thick.
This is a great knife from a great company (how many times have I said that about Spyderco's products?) and you should give it some serious consideration if you want a "pretty" knife that will still cut like a laser. And now, some photographs...
