spyderco salt 1

All the salt knives are tough as nails IMO. Why are u considering the salt 1 instead of a delica? Going to be in corrosive environments?

because I don't have any Knives that can stand up to salt water and thought this looked like a good one. I also liked this one delica with white handle scales bit can't find it anywhere to buy

Ahh. I was just curious. I love the salt knives and use them on the ocean almost daily. I have nothing but good to say about them. If you are going to be in a salt environment, then it's a no brainer. Get yourself a salt! Be that as it may, if I wanted a plain edge and corrosion resistance was not an issue then I would go with the vg10 delica as the steel will hold an edge better than h1.

Unless....unless...you are thinking to get a serrated edge. In that case, you should choose the salt regardless of environment. Serrated edge h1 is hard to beat.

What gringo said^

The salt 1 and the delica are the same pattern (and BTW you won't find any of the FRN handle'd knives in white, they're all disco'd) and VG-10 which is stainless (just no where near H-1) is a better steel for edge retention of a PE than H-1 so unless your going in saltwater every day, or just flat out refuse to do a tiny bit of preventative maintinance (oiling it and keeping it clean) you should go with the delica in VG-10, now like gringo said if you ARE going in saltwater / spray or other corrosive environments every day then by all means go for the Salt1, but again in PE it'll take more sharpening than the VG-10 steel does.

I have a Salt and carry it quite often....While it won't hold an edge like VG-10, in my world the amount I use my knife it does not matter. H! still holds up as well as AUS-8 in my experience, so it is no slouch. VG-10 is also pretty stain resistant even after a week at Kern River, swimming and rafting. My Endura Wave had zero rust issues. But when I sailed from San Francisco to San Diego last year, I carried my Salt and it showed zero rust. Basically, I dig my Salt and if it was the only knife I could own, I would not think that was a bad thing.

IME, the Salt knives are the absolute best knives for minimal maintenance. They hold up well, SE versions have excellent edge-holding, and all Salts are easy to touch up on a Sharpmaker when necessary. Occasionally, someone will say that the "H1" logo on the blade rusts, but it's not the blade rusting; it's actually tiny bits of residual metal from whatever tool was used to etch the logo onto the blade that may become embedded (imbedded?) into the logo.

The Salt knives (Pacific, Tasman and Salt 1) have become my most-used Spydercos.

They're better than good. I beat the crap out of one on purpose, and it took a LOT to break it. -20 degrees and a good solid whacking finally broke the handle. Blade was fine through all testing. It's on Spyderco forums under "H1 versus a shoe". I use a Salt 1 every day at work.

I've been using one for several years regularly for fishing and beach camping. Absolutely wonderful knife. Easy to clean the sand out of it. I agree about the edge holding of plain edged H1... I would recommend that you get the serrated version - which will hold an edge for a loooooong time.
