spyderco salt compared to endura

salt - no steel liners inside the handle, 2 positions of the clip (only tip up, the Endura 3 style... i think), thinner blade, extremely corrosion resistant and unfortunately soft blade steel (you need to sharpen more often at least in the beginning (Spyderco and users say that it gets better with time as the steel is precipitaion hardening type - use and sharpen more and it gets harder and the edge will last longer. The salt is a bit shorter compared to endura and the jimping at the back of the blade is less agressive.

Endura - big, solid, 4 clip positions, 2 steel nested liners (higher weight), VG-10 (long lasting edge, high resistance to wear and corrosion. But not that corrosion resistant as H1. Tests show that H1 cannot rust. This is not a joke), thicker blade.

Overall the E4 wins if you search a tough worker, and Salt if you work in high humid environment.

One thing to add E4 is saber grind and Salt i think uses hollow grind.

Others will add or correct:-)

In my experience, H1 seems to to be able take a very slightly sharper edge than VG10, but both are fine grained steels that will take a hair splittingly sharp edge. I would also say that H1 is a tiny bit easier to sharpen on a SharpMaker.

Awhile back I did a edge holding comparison of VG10 and H1 with both serrated and plain edged on cardboard and found that plain edged VG10 cut more than 2 1/2 times as much cardboard as plain edged H1 before going dull. Serrated VG10 and H1 were about tied (both cut more than 4 times the cardboard as the plain edged H1 Salt).

I prefer the E4 to any other Endura or the Salt, since its heavier and feels more solid in hand. Im not a fan of the riveted constructions of the Salt and earlier Enudra, accompanied by non SS liners the knives feel very light and cheap IMO. Some people prefer this I just dont. Vg-10 is alot better for edge retention and its decently hard, H-1 is soft.

OK..so which handle material do you guys prefer in on the E4? Is the G-10 worth the extra money?

Ill stick with my E4...although i've heard good things about the fullflat ground Endura with G10.

The whole idea behind the salt I believe is extreme corrosion resistance above all else. If you're going to be working around salt water regularly, the salt is for you

I would take the E4 in FRN over the Salt. That is if you don't work in a corrosive environment. It has a good blade shape and is a great cutter. That being said the Full flat groung G-10 Endura is nice i'm sure. Get that one and tell me how you like it! ;)

Tough choice. In a plain edge I would probably go with the full flat ground G10 version or the Emerson opener (waved) version. For a serrated edge and/or for use around salt water I would go with a Pacific Salt.
