I got this knife for kayaking in the ocean. Use it almost everyday this week at least once. No rust to report. The question is related to the fact that the handle doesnt seem modified in any way to allow for the knife to air out better. No holes in the handle for draining etc.
Maybe this is on purpose to keep sand or whatever out?
My question is, do you think it would be ok to drill small holes in the handle every couple of dimples to aid in dry time? Would this weaken the handle? Maybe dry time wouldnt be significantly changes? What do you guys think of this idea?

I don't think it's necessary. Drying a knife out quickly is usually desireable to avoid rust - not a problem with the Salt. It would weaken the handle - how much depends on a lot of variable such as how big are the holes, how many, how close and where are they. The knife already has one big hole in the handle that the blade fits into when closed. A few more little ones might not make much difference.

I do saltwater kayaking now and then myself, and although I have a Salt I, I don't take it with me on the water. While I like the knife, I don't care for the fact that it's a riveted model, not screwed together. I would prefer to be able to fully disassemble a knife that has been taken into salt water. For this reason, when I kayak, I use my Benchmade dive knife (100SH2O), which is attached to my PFD vest. (Sorry, I know this is the Spyderco forum; I'm just being honest.)

I wish Spyderco would have made the Swick in H1 steel, because that would accompany me on my ventures. I also wish they would make some of the newer knives (Delica/Endura 4) in H1 -- or a dedicated dive knife. That would be cool!

Okay, who's gonna sign a petition for a Spyderco Dive knife? :D

I use my Salt 1 for seakayaking all the time. It is attached to my vest and gets very wet, I like to roll a lot. I always rinse my gear with fresh water after every trip. I allow the Salt 1 to drip dry with the blade open. Never an issue and no concerns .

I have Pacific Salt and I am pretty happy with it. But there is one place on the blade where I got rust on it almost immediately (3-4hours !!!) after first time scuba diving with it in the pocket of my jacket (BCD). It was the PACIFIC SALT engraving. Absolutely no signs of any rust anywhere else including other blade inscriptions. Anyway polished the rust off pretty fast using my toothpaste and covered with some silicone grease for future use - no problems anymore. Can anyone explain me why rustless H1 gets so easily rust in the place of the factory engraving ?

I take my Pacific Salt with me as a backup knife while scuba diving because I like the idea to have some Spydie with me also underwater. And because it's serrations are so sharp it may be really useful one day, hopefully not.

I absolutely support the Dedicated Spyderco Dive Knife PETITION.
How about some fixed-blade with nice diving sheath? Spyderco design, ergos, quality.. yeah, yeah, yeah !!!

Hey JPS, would you consider opening a new thread titled perhaps "Rust on H1?!" or something like that? I know that Spyderco pretty much says it is impossible to rust, and two of my buddies did independent salt water dunk tank tests over on the factory forum with positive results. I would be interested in what Sal and company will say. They might miss your post buried in this thread. Up to you of course. ;)

I think micro particles of the engraving tool were probably embeded in the insignia and that is what rusted, not the blade itself. That is just my guess.
