Hi, I recently ordered a spyderco shabaria that should be arriving sometime this week:). I can't wait to recieve it the blade shape looks like it would make a great slicer and penetrator. Basically I am looking to EDC it when it gets here and wanted to know if anyone else has had one for awhile now and how it stood the test of time.

I have a Spyderco Shabaria myself. Mine is one I won off Ebay and it is a numbered collector's edition. I have never carried it but I am now on the lookout for a used one to carry. When I first bought it I did so for novelty purposes. At first glance I thought it was one of the most ugly knives I ever saw. I have been playing with it and I was surprised to see how well the handle conformed to my hand. I was also surprised to see how ergonimically the blade was positioned while holding in a normal manner. It now sort of reminds me of my Spyderco Massad Ayoob. It also has kind of an ergonomic configuration. The Shabaria still doesn't win a looks contest in my opinion but I can now really appreciate the functional engineering that went into the design of the knife. You know the old saying that " You can't judge a book by it's cover". Well you can't judge a knife by looking at it in a magazine/catalog. Well fellow Spyder-heads all I can say is that it deserves a try. Happy Holidays JD Spydo :)

It's a great knife. Much more utilitarian than it looks. The blade shape is excellent for slicing and the fine tip is neat. Scares the hell out of some people though.

The handle scales and edge hold up well. Can't say the same for the blade alignment. It started to rub against the inner liner on opening after about 4 months of use. That was about 2 years ago. I believe I tightened all the screws that hold the frame together, adjusted the eccentric pivot (if it has one, I don't remember), backed out the pivot pin, put on lock-tite and screwed it in until it was just tight enough to hold the blade in the middle between the liners, but not so tight that it was hard to open. Did that about 18 months ago and haven't had a problem since. I've also had to do similar things to my Starmate and Lum Chinese for the same problem.

The Shabaria is also unusual in that it has one of the highest bladelength to handle length ratio of any folder.

Mr Glesser I just got my first one ( Shabaria) here about a month ago. I was lucky enough to nail down a numbered one. I have played with this thing for hours now. Even more than I play with the Spyderfly ( I know I need to get a real life- ha ha). But you know that Spyder has grown on me more than any that I have aquired here lately. At first I thought it was truly the ugliest knife I ever saw. Now after hands on proof I clearly see what an engineering marvel that it is and I wish you all would bring it back. I now want one for EDC. I had seen this ol' guy in the magazines/catalogs for the last 5 years and never even given it the time of day. I also felt the same way about the Massad Ayoob until I got one of them. Now these 2 blades are among my favorites. You truly have to test drive some of these for sure and the Shabaria is one that absolutely has to be used to be appreciated. I have learned the slow hard way that function will beat out looks almost every time. Thank you Sir for making them available to us. I wish you and all the people at the Great Spyder Factory the very best of Holidays. JD Spydo

do a search on froogle.com, there are several sources but I would suggest calling to make sure that they are in stock first.

I think you'll like the Shabaria. I heard its intial size was much bigger (the blade was about 5").

Well dialex do you know if any of those bigger Shabarias ever made it to market. Are there any out there for sale or trade? I would love to have a bigger version of that knife. Or was it just a prototype that never made it out of the factory? Anyone know??

The Shabaria is a great knife. The "large" size would have been nice to have, but I'm happy with mine. I had one converted to tip up by SC Rebel, that one is quick in the hand. :)
Try Patsy at www.beckscutlery.com . She may still have one on her shelf.

AFAIK, it was never made into production :( I'd like a huge Shabaria myself. With G-10 handles and compression lock, if possible ;)
