What do you guys think of the spyderco sharp maker? How well does it sharpen steels from s30v to s90v. I'm looking for a sharpener I can pack up and take with me when I go somewhere. Just wondered what you guys think of this sharpener

The Sharpmaker is a good sharpener. It's my main sharpener at the moment but I plan on upgrading to an Edge Pro or Wicked Edge for sure. The Sharpmaker is good because it's simple and stowable. There are also a wide array of aftermarket stones available for it. I'm able to get a good edge on just about whatever I've tried it with so far but tougher or harder steels can take a good amount of time. It is not a good choice if you plan on using it for reprofiling.

With the new CBN rods and light pressure one can reprofile any steel and then refine the edge on the medium and fine.

I like mine a lot. Works on the Seb's s35vn like bigfatts said, simple and stowable. It fits in my bag no prob if it's portability your looking for definitely grab one...be warned there's is no space to store additional stones, should you purchase any, but they come with tubes and still organize just fine

I think it's a great knife maintenance tool. Great for touch-ups and maintaining a great edge. Not so good for re-profiling. Granted, I have not tried the diamond or CBN rods. I have the medium, fine, and ultra fine rods.

The only steels I've not had much luck with on the Sharpmaker are ZDP-189 (Ladybug and Dragonfly) and S110V (0560CBCF and Native). I won't rule out user error though. I've had good luck with the Sharpmaker on just about everything else ranging from 420HC and 1.4110 through M4 and M390.

Are the CBN rods any better than the diamond? I'm afraid to investigate further, but I think I may have used a bit too much pressure on my diamond rods and knocked a lot of the grit off :/

I asked this question before, but it was right when the CBN came out for the 'maker, curious if they cut or maintain easier or if they work about the same

If you grabbed either the diamond or CBN rods I think you'd be pleasantly surprised with the result! Takes time but it works!
