I just ordered a spyderco sharpener after years of using the professional sharpener in town. Before I get started, is there anything I should know before using it?

I hear something about the sharpener blunting the point, is that true and if so how do I get by it?

Thanks

Greetings Jason.Lee740: Watch the video. Read the instructions cover to cover. Clean the ceramic rods as soon as you feel the abrasive effect degrade. When drawing the blade across the rods, do not let the tip slip off the rod. Stop short of drawing the last 1/4 to 1/2 inch of blade across the rods. Treat the last 1/4 to 1/2 inch as a separate blade. Use only the flats of the stones on the last fraction of the blade tip. Be patient. Precision and consistency will pay off with a uniform bevel that is easy to maintain. The first use (reprofiling) may take a LONG time. OldDude1

Like expressed above watch the dvd and take your time .You will be happy with the results.

Big Mistake!!!!!!!!!!

Watch the video ......THREE OR FOUR TIMES!!!!!!!! Not just once.
Then sharpen a knife WHILE LISTENING to the video. Then WATCH the video once more. Then... you'll be able to really sharpen a knife properly.

Each time you watch you'll pick up one or two little bits that you missed the time before, and it's these little bits that will make the biggest difference in your sharpening skills.

how would i clean the rods? Can i just run it under water and scrub it with a sponge?

Yes, and use some kind of abrasive cleaner like Comet. Be careful with the rods. They are very hard but will chip or break if you drop them or hit them together.

A eraser works pretty well to clean the too. I like the pink erasers best.

Comet on a sponge works well. Bar Keepers friend works, IMO, much better. It contains Oxalic acid and removes the steel residue fast. The use of a heavy duty Scotch Brite synthetic scouring pad further speeds the process. Using a heavy duty artist's eraser will also work. Bar Keepers Friend is available in most large supermarkets in the same isle as the green 3M scouring pads. OldDude1

Sharpmaker's a good tool. One trick: work on the knives with the rig set below you, so you're standing over it...and have a lamp shining on top of the spine. This will help you make sure the blade's vertical and not tilted. I do alternate strokes at a 45 degree angle with the tip pointed up and also recommend staying off the tip, using the flats works well.
