Sal - Because I had learned to sharpen my knives free-hand and my old paddle style "diamond" sharpener wouldn't cut anymore it was clearly time for a replacement. I purchased the Profile set. These appeared large enough to work even filet knife blades, but small enough to drag along on fishing trips.

I hadn't realized how clapped out the old one was until I used these. They're great! And they're fast - none of that endless zinging away. I would use the old sharpening stone while watching TV and it's a wonder the tolerant one didn't file for divorce.

It is my understanding that the cutting medium is Aluminum Oxide (saphire) which is around 7.5 or 8 Mohs (sp) scale. My question is, will these things wear out? Or, as they wear, are new Al Oxide particles exposed? Once again, this is a great product. The knives at my house are all sharp again. Jack

Hi Jack. thanx for the sales pitch.

The "alumina" particles are 9.22 on the mohs scale. The white stone is closed celled and will probably not wear in several lifetimes of use.

The gray (brown) stone is the same hardness, but is opened celled and will wear in time, but will last a long time.

Our competition uses half of our Sharpmaker stones for a "carry piece". We stopped doing that 10 years ago when we designed he ProFile shape. For plain edges, serrated edge, shop tools or household sharpening, the shape of the ProFile is far superior.

We'll be promoting them more next year. We also have a "half size" ProFile coming out for a "smaller carry package".

We also have a diamond ProFile in development. both the 8" and the 4". A very nice 3 piece set packaged in leather like the current pieces.
