I'm looking at the sharpmaker, but also the other v-setup sharpener (gauntlet) and they just released the duck foot, which seems like the same priciples. I mostly just try to keep a sharp edge on the 20-something knives I carry regularly, but would also like to keep my kitchen knives sharp. My blades are about half spyderco, and most of them in the fancier steels that have a reputation for being harder to sharpen. Anyone have any advice on which system I should get and why? Also, I only have a few serated blades, but I'd like to keep them sharp too.

I have an older Sharpmaker with only the 30 degree angle and their bench stones. The Sharpmaker is pretty versatile, easy to set up and get a good edge. The Gauntlet seems pretty similar to the Sharpmaker in the way it is used. The duck foot shaped sharpener is certainly interesting and it I didn't already have their bench stones in 3 different grit levels I would consider buying one because that has to be one of the quickest and easiest set-ups for sharpening.

To add; I can get what I consider to be a good edge with either the Sharpmaker or the bench stones but it is much easier and quicker with the Sharpmaker. I will admit that I am not very proficient yet with the bench stones but it has been very satisfying when I do succeed in getting a good edge. If you decide on bench stones at some point be aware that there is a learning curve to using them well.

Are you fixed on a SharpMaker or Gauntlet style of sharpener? I have an old Sharpmaker and it was very difficult to get a decent edge on my Paramilitary 2. Might be worth looking into freehand bench stone. My Chosera stones have been a dream since the moment I got them (couple weeks, take my opinion with a grain of salt).

Edit; D DavidABQ beat me to it. Yes there's a learning curve, but well worth the effort.
