Hey guys,
I just wanted to know how course the diamond rods are from spyderco.
I was planing on getting some queen knives and wanted to be able to reprofile them given I heard they come blunt.
Will they be good enough or should i just get some DMT double sided stones?

As I understand, they're a medium-grit diamond, whatever that means in not-actual-numbers.

If you need to do some more serious reprofiling on your Sharpmaker, you can always just drift down to your local auto-parts store and snag some black wet-or-dry sandpaper in coarser grit. 320 or 400 makes fast work of reprofiling most streels. Either tape it tightly around your medium Sharpmaker rods to make them more aggressive, or clip it to a piece of glass and use it like a bench stone. :)

I have a set of the Sharpmaker diamond rods and I've had no problem resetting the bevels on Spyderco's S30V and BMs D2. Still takes a bit of work, but slow and easy beats fast and furious for me any day. The advantage to using them (if you're going to use the Sharpmaker for touch-ups) is that you can keep the angles fairly consistent since you use the same base.

thats a good idea with the sandaper, I think I will just order the dmt stones instead, and buy the sandpaper if necisary

thanks for the help guys

A DMT XXC or XC cuts like you would not believe, it will make very short work of your re-profiling. It'd be worth your time to do some reading in the forum here on how people use their diamond plates, there's a lot of good advice to be had. :)

Per Spyderco, in an email response to my question (which took 1.5 months to answer):
The approximate micron size of the diamond rods are 600.

Now, I seriously doubt that is the case, as 80-grit sandpaper is only 190microns. My guess is that the diamond rods are either 60microns -- a typo on their part -- equivalent to 220-grit sandpaper, or equivalent to 600-grit, meaning the person who replied to me didn't understand what they were typing.

Either way, I am able to reprofile 154CM with only a little bit of work (my diamond rods are about 7 years old). If my rods were new, I could probably reprofile s30v.

I own the diamond rods, and they can be used for reprofiling, about 220 grit equivalent. They cut very well, but remember that they are diamond rods, so using extra pressure must be avoided. It will not help them cut... but instead might dislodge the diamonds, so just a warning. Use a light touch and let the diamonds do the work. You will take off lots of metal that way and be happy with the diamond rods. :)
